Dickinson sweeps Gettysburg in CC twinbill

Game 1 Box | Game 2 Box

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – A big inning in each game proved to be Gettysburg's undoing as Dickinson swept a Centennial Conference (CC) doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon at Bobby Jones Field. The Red Devils scored three runs in the top of the seventh to win game one, 3-1, and rode a four-run fourth to a 5-3 victory in the nightcap.

For the Red Devils (13-17, 3-5 CC), sophomore left fielder Jess Burger 4-for-7 with four RBI and a run scored for the afternoon. Both of her hits in the nightcap were triples, and she was one of five Dickinson starters with two hits in the game. Sophomore designated player/right fielder Kaitlyn McDonald and junior second baseman Alex Speace each collected three hits for the day.

The Bullets (16-7, 2-2 CC) got three hits each from senior left fielder Katie Eiden (Silver Spring, MD/Georgetown Visitation [DC]), sophomore center fielder Heather Sagaities (Hollidaysburg, PA/Hollidaysburg) and junior second baseman Megan Dean (Olney, MD/Our Lady of Good Counsel). Dean scored and drove in a run in game two, while Sagaities had a run scored, and Eiden knocked in a run.

In the opener, Dickinson senior Lauren Porter and Gettysburg senior Shannon Kiry (Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) matched zeroes for the first four innings. Kiry kept the visitors scoreless for another inning, but the Bullets broke up the scoreless deadlock in the bottom of the fifth. Dean struck out, but reached on a passed ball to lead off the inning. Junior right fielder Meg Gorsuch (Mount Airy, MD/South Carroll) sacrificed her to second, and freshman Rachel Soule (Kinnelon, NJ/Kinnelon) pinch ran. Two batters later, Eiden ripped a single to right field. Soule rounded third, forcing a throw that got over the catcher's head, allowing her to score.

After a quiet sixth inning for both squads, the Red Devils crossed the plate three times on the strength of two hits and three Gettysburg errors in the top of the seventh. Burger singled in sophomore shortstop Eve Massa with the go-ahead run, and Dickinson would come out of the inning with a 3-1 lead. The Bullets loaded the bases in their last chance at bat, but could not push a run across.

In the nightcap, Gettysburg again got on the board first on an RBI infield single by Eiden that plated Dean. The lead would not last though. The Red Devils scored four times on four hits in the top of the fourth inning. It appeared that the Bullets would escape the inning with minimal damage despite facing a bases-loaded, no-out situation. The Bullets got a harmless fly ball to center, and the next hitter dropped a swinging bunt that sophomore catcher Abbe Miller (Spring City, PA/Owen J. Roberts) picked up while she had a foot on the plate to get the force out. Dickinson sophomore center fielder Rachel Fleming then hit a ball up the middle that Gettysburg freshman shortstop Nicole Yannotta (Whippany Park, NJ/Whippany Park) made a nice diving play on to keep the ball on the infield, but her attempt to flip the ball to Dean from a prone position for the inning-ending force out was late. McDonald scored on the play, and Burger followed with a booming triple to center that cleared the bases.

The Bullets picked up single runs in each of the next two innings on an RBI double by Dean in the bottom of the fourth, and a single by Miller in the fifth. Sagaities had opened the inning with a double and came around to score.

In the bottom of the sixth, freshman third baseman Jessica Wallick (Chambersburg, PA/Chambersburg) led off with a single. Senior designated player Margaret Hallahan (Huntingdon, PA/Huntingdon) dropped a sacrifice bunt, but reached on a low throw to first. Dean moved the runners over on a sacrifice bunt, and Gorsuch reached on an error to load the bases, but Porter, who had come on in relief of sophomore Karrie Brondell, got the next two hitters to end the threat.

The Red Devils added an insurance run in the top of the seventh, and closed out the victory despite a two-out single by Yannotta in the bottom of the inning.

The Bullets get right back to work on Wednesday when they travel to Frederick, Md., to take on Hood in the first of four consecutive road doubleheaders. The first pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
