FREDERICK, Md. – Freshman Kristy Rubino (Parsippany, NJ/Parsippany) tossed a three-hit shutout in game one, and senior Shannon Kiry (Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) followed it up with a seven-hit effort in the nightcap to give Gettysburg a non-conference sweep of Hood at Thomas Athletic Field on Wednesday afternoon. The wins snap a three-game skid for the visitors.
For the Bullets (18-7), Rubino picked up her fourth shutout of the season in game one, allowing just three hits. It marks the fifth time in 12 starts she has given up three hits or fewer, and she added nine strikeouts. She improves to 8-4 on the season. Kiry followed with another blanking, scattering seven hits for her fourth shutout of 2006. She picked up her 10th win to put her in double digits for the fourth time in her career.
Sophomore catcher Abbe Miller (Spring City, PA/Owen J. Roberts) led the offense with a 3-for-5 afternoon, scoring twice and collecting two RBI. Blazers' (16-13) freshman shortstop Sara Wastler went 4-for-8 in a losing effort.
In the first inning of game one, Miller hit a two-out single to left and scored the game's first run on a double to left center off the bat of freshman shortstop Nicole Yannotta (Whippany, NJ/Whippany Park). That allowed Rubino to take the mound for the first time with all of the offense she would need. She set Hood down in order in the first and second innings, and watched her advantage grow in the top of the third.
Sophomore center fielder Heather Sagaities (Hollidaysburg, PA/Hollidaysburg) singled to center with one out. Senior left fielder Katie Eiden (Silver Spring, MD/Georgetown Visitation [DC]) followed with an infield single, and Miller drove them both in with a double to right center.
Rubino came back in the bottom of the inning and issued a two-out walk, but the Blazers would not get their first hit until there was one out in the fourth. Sophomore left fielder Jamie Bussey singled to center to break up the no-hit bid. She went on to steal second, but was left there. No Hood runner made it past second in the game.
Game two was more of the same from both sides. Kiry and Hood freshman Kara Robert each held the opposition off the scoreboard for four innings. Gettysburg broke through with a single run each in the fifth and sixth innings to give Kiry enough offense to get the win.
Freshman designated player Tayler Cianciotta (Scotch Plains, NJ/Scotch Plains-Fanwood) hit a one-out double down the left field line in the fifth. Sophomore Ali Stoll (Swampscott, MA/Swampscott) pinch ran and came around to score on an error.
In the sixth, Miller singled to center with two outs, and Yannotta doubled her home to set the final score. Hood got three hits in the game from Wastler and two more from senior left fielder Heidi Bixler, but the Blazers were never able to string enough of them together to get a run home.
The Bullets return to action on Saturday when they travel to Swarthmore for a CC doubleheader. The first game is scheduled for 1 p.m.
