CARLILSE, Pa. – Mike Bock went 2-for-4 and drove in the game-winning run as Dickinson defeated Gettysburg 6-5 in Centennial Conference (CC) action on Friday.
With the win, Dickinson (11-15-1, 4-3-1 CC) snapped a four-game losing streak against Gettysburg who fell to 11-18 overall and 3-7 in the CC.
The Bullets jumped out to an early 5-0 lead after two innings. Ben Carey (Colchester, CT/St. Bernard) singled in the first inning. The next batter, Joe Bonyai (Torrington, CT/Hotchkiss School), drilled a triple to right-center field that plated Carey. Brian Pernice (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown) followed with his third home run of the season. He knocked a two-run shot to left field to give Gettysburg a 3-0 advantage after the first.
In the second, Mark Campo (Arendtsville, PA/Biglerville) scored on an RBI double by Matt Stillitano (Ewing, NJ/The Hun School of Princeton), and Stillitano scored on a sacrifice fly by Bonyai.
With the score 5-0 and having been set down 1-2-3 in back-to-back innings by Gettysburg starting pitcher Tobin Whitman (Lyme Center, NH/Hanover), the Red Devils' bats came alive. Dickinson rapped four consecutive singles to start the bottom of the third inning. The fourth single was a bases-loaded knock into center field by Matt Catania that scored Luke Volker. Ryan Stearrett finished the four-run inning with an RBI double.
After a scoreless fourth inning, Dickinson tied the game at 5-5 in the bottom of the fifth inning. Stearrett drove home Ryan Miklusak who had reached base on a triple. The Red Devils took the lead 6-5 on Bock's RBI single in the sixth inning.
After giving up four earned runs in the first two innings, Dickinson starter Matthew Villone and reliever Matt Eonta held the Bullets scoreless to deliver a 6-5 win. Gettysburg only had four players reach base in the final seven innings of the game.
Pernice led the Bullets on the day by going 2-for-4 with two RBI. Carey and Stillitano were also 2-for-4 on the day. Stearrett led the Red Devils with a 3-for-4 game including two RBI.
Gettysburg returns to action on Saturday at home for a doubleheader against Muhlenberg. Game time is 12:30 p.m.
