Gettysburg belts 33 hits, splits doubleheader withMuhlenberg

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Brian Spicer (Haddonfield, NJ/Haddonfield) won his fourth game of the season to lead Gettysburg to a 6-5 win in game one of a doubleheader against Muhlenberg in Centennial Conference (CC) action on Saturday.
 
The Bullets (12-19, 4-8 CC) split with the Mules (15-13, 8-4 CC) for the third consecutive season as Muhlenberg won the nightcap 17-15.
 
Gettysburg jumped out to a 3-1 lead after the third inning of game one. Brendan McDonald (Bennington, VT/Mt. Anthony Union) scored on an RBI single by Mark Campo (Arendtsville, PA/Biglerville) in the second. In the third, Joe Bonyai (Torrington, CT/Hotchkiss School) smacked a triple to right-center field that plated Ben Carey (Colchester, CT/St. Bernard). Bonyai later scored to give Gettysburg a 3-1 advantage.
 
Muhlenberg tied the game in the top of the sixth inning 3-3. Joseph Carlo and Matt Tobia led off the inning with back-to-back singles. Carlo's pinch runner Chris Costa and Tobia scored on a bases-loaded walk and a sacrifice fly, respectively.
 
With a three-run bottom of the sixth, the Bullets took a 6-3 lead. Matt Stillitano (Ewing, NJ/The Hun School of Princeton) hit a two-run single to left field that plated Sean McGee (Mamaroneck, NY/Mamaroneck) and Campo. Stillitano later scored on a single from Dave Olson (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park).
 
The Mules rallied in the top of the seventh to score two runs, but closer Brian Koch (Ocean City, NJ/Ocean City) recorded the final two outs of the game to pick up his third save of the season. Spicer struck out seven batters in 6 1/3 innings for his fourth win of the season.
 
In game two, Gettysburg and Muhlenberg combined for 43 hits in the Mules' 17-15 victory. Muhlenberg took a 15-4 advantage heading into the bottom of the eighth inning. John Kalis led the offensive attack with two doubles and a triple. His RBI double in the sixth inning was part of a six-run inning. Five Mules scored twice during the 15-4 run.
 
However, Gettysburg fought back with a four-run eighth and battled in the ninth to tie the game at 15-15. The Bullets rapped six hits in the ninth after the first out was recorded. Carey started the rally with a double down the left-field line. Bonayi followed with a single and Brian Pernice (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown) walked to load the bases. Andrew Freeburger (Baltimore, MD/Parkville) then drilled a three-run double into the gap.

After the second out of the inning, the Bullets started a two-out rally with Freeburger still on second base. McGee, Campo and Mike Emrey (Rising Sun, MD/Rising Sun) all singled and Olson cleared the bases with a 2-run double that tied the game at 15-15.

Muhlenberg tallied two runs in the top of the 10th to win the game. Daniel Asip scored on a sacrifice fly and Edward Risener hit an RBI single to plate Eric Hammond.

Campo went 6-for-9 and Bonyai was 5-for-9 at the plate to lead the Bullets on the day.
 
Gettysburg returns to action on Tuesday at Johns Hopkins. Game time is 3:30 p.m.
