Box Score
BALTIMORE, Md. – No. 12 Johns Hopkins scored four runs in the fifth and four more in the seventh to overcome a 3-2 deficit and take a 10-5 victory over Gettysburg in Centennial Conference (CC) action on Tuesday afternoon. Four different hitters collected at least two hits in a 13-hit attack for the Blue Jays.
Gettysburg (12-20, 4-9 CC) juniors Ben Carey (Colchester, CT/St. Bernard's) and Andrew Freeburger (Baltimore, MD/Parkville) each went 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored. Senior catcher Brendan McDonald (Bennington, VT/Mt. Anthony Union) came off the bench to go 1-for-2 with a two-run home run.
Johns Hopkins (23-4-2, 11-1-1 CC) got a 3-for-4 effort from senior first baseman Tim Sliker, who knocked in three runs and scored one. Sophomore shortstop Jonas Fester, sophomore designated hitter Rob Pietroforte and senior right fielder Gary Rosenberg all collected two hits on the afternoon. Fester and Rosenberger each hit their third home run of the season. On the mound, sophomore right-hander Ryan Kuhlman went seven strong innings, scattering six hits and allowing just three runs while striking out eight. He issued only two walks and improved to 5-0 on the season.
The Blue Jays got single runs in the first and third innings, but it was the Bullets that struck with the first big inning. In the top of the third, trailing 1-0, sophomore second baseman Matt Stillitano (Ewing, NJ/The Hun School of Princeton) led off with a double to right. Classmate Dave Olson (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) sacrificed him to third, and Carey drove him in with a single to right center. Carey then stole second and scored on a single by junior designated hitter Brian Pernice (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown), who scored on a double by Freeburger.
A pair of four run innings put Johns Hopkins on top for good. Rosenberg hit a two-run home run to right center in the fifth, and Sliker plated two with a double. Two innings later, Sliker drove in his third run of the game with a one-out single. He scored on a single to left off the bat of senior left fielder Bryce Bauman. Fester then capped the scoring for the home team with a home run to left center.
The Bullets cut the deficit to five on McDonald's two-run home run, but it was not enough.
The two teams will close out the home-and-home series on Friday with a 3:30 p.m. contest at Kirchhoff Field.
