No. 1 Gettysburg clinches top spot in CC playoffs with 14-10 win over McDaniel

Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Sophomore attacker Krissy Browning (Baldwin, MD/Fallston) scored five goals and added an assist to lead No. 1 Gettysburg to a 14-10 win over McDaniel in Centennial Conference (CC) action on Wednesday night at Clark Field. The victory gives the Bullets the No. 1 seed and home field advantage in the CC playoffs.

Browning and senior midfielder Jenn Kelly (Westbury, NY/Carle Place) led all scorers with six points for Gettysburg (14-0, 8-0 CC), which extended its school-record winning streak to 14 games. Kelly, who netted a pair of goals and four assists, was one of four seniors playing in their final regular season home game.

For the Green Terror (6-8, 4-4 CC), junior midfielder Michelle Mullen paced the offense with five goals. Sophomore goalie Sarah White kept her team in the contest despite a 44-22 shot deficit by making 19 saves.

Bullets' junior attacker Katie Hagan (Media, PA/Cardinal O'Hara) got the scoring started just 2:21 in, and sophomore attacker Megan Moore (Chestertown, MD/Gunston Day School) added the first of her two goals less than two minutes later. McDaniel sophomore Kerrie Wuenschel stopped the mini-run at the 5:55 mark on an assist from senior attacker Caitlin Schellhorn, but the Bullets got a pair of Browning goals midway through the half to pull out to a 4-1 lead.

Following Browning's two goals, the scoreboard went quiet for six minutes, but that would not last. Beginning with a goal by McDaniel senior Tara Smith at the 20:03 mark, the game saw five scores in a 2:18 span. Browning answered with her third goal 17 seconds after Smith's score, and 23 seconds after that, Gettysburg junior attacker Jen Betts (Potomac, MD/Academy of the Holy Cross) extended the lead to four again. Mullen then struck twice in a 40-second stretch to close it to 6-4.

Once again, the Bullets answered to pull out to a four-goal lead heading into halftime. Senior attacker Ellie Shihadeh (Malvern, PA/Conestoga) scored on an assist from Kelly with 4:23 remaining before the break. Kelly then scored with 1:40 showing on the clock after sophomore defender Callie Gates (Basking Ridge, NJ/Ridge) stepped in front of a McDaniel pass at full speed and started a break across midfield. She led Kelly, who then converted a 1-on-0 against White. The assist is the first point of Gates' career.

As was the case in the first half, Hagan opened the scoring in the second half, closing out a three-goal run for Gettysburg and giving the home team the first of its three five-goal leads on the night. McDaniel senior Kim Lowry opened a three-goal Green Terror run over a 4:29 span that cut the Bullets' lead back to two goals at 9-7. Gettysburg responded with two more Browning goals and one by Ceglarski, and then held off the Green Terror despite three more goals by Mullen.

The Bullets will hit the road to face Haverford in Saturday's CC finale, looking for its third perfect conference season in four years. Game time is 1 p.m.
