HAVERFORD, Pa. – Haverford sophomore third baseman Lindsey Sullivan and senior pitcher Nora Spriggs each drove in a pair of runs in game one, and freshman Becky Garibotto and sophomore Julia Iodice combined for a seven-hit shutout in the nightcap to give the Fords a 4-1 and 5-0 sweep over Gettysburg in Centennial Conference (CC) action on Thursday afternoon at Class of 1995 Field.
The Bullets (21-10, 5-5 CC) got three hits on the day from sophomore center fielder Heather Sagaities (Hollidaysburg, PA/Hollidaysburg). Freshman designated player Tayler Cianciotta (Scotch Plains, NJ/Scotch Plains-Fanwood) collected two hits in the opener, and sophomore catcher Abbe Miller (Spring City, PA/Owen J. Roberts) singled twice in game two.
The Haverford (18-14, 10-2 CC) pitching staff was outstanding all day, as Spriggs scattered five hits in game one and allowed just one unearned run. Garibotto gave up six hits in six innings of work before giving way to Iodice, who closed out the shutout.
The Fords jumped on top early in game one. After a walk and a bunt single put runners on first and second with one out in the bottom of the first, Sullivan knocked in both runners with a double. The Bullets got one back in the top of the third. Senior left fielder Katie Eiden (Silver Spring, MD/Georgetown Visitation [DC]) reached on a fielder's choice and came around to score when Miller struck out and reached on a passed ball. A wild throw allowed Eiden to cross the plate with what proved to be Gettysburg's only run of the day.
A two-run double by Spriggs in the bottom of the inning answered the Bullets' score, and set the final score at 4-1.
In game two, Haverford scored twice in the first and once in the second to give its pitching staff all the support it would need. Sullivan plated a run with her second double of the day, and Spriggs collected an RBI-single in the first. In the second, freshman first baseman Natalie Richman led off with a double and scored on a two-base hit by senior catcher Adriane Theis. A two-run fifth by the home team would put the game out of reach.
The Bullets return home on Saturday for a 1 p.m. CC doubleheader against Ursinus at Bobby Jones Field.
