Kelly and Howell lead No. 1 Gettysburg past Haverford, 18-5

HAVERFORD, Pa. – Jenn Kelly (Westbury, NY/Carle Place) and Jennie Howell (Huntington, NY/Huntington) each had six points to lead No. 1 Gettysburg to an 18-5 victory over Haverford in Centennial Conference (CC) action on Saturday.
 
With the win, Gettysburg (15-0, 9-0 CC) extended its program-record winning streak to 15 games and finished the CC regular season undefeated at 9-0. By virtue of going undefeated in CC play, the Bullets will host the CC playoffs next weekend. Haverford drops to 7-9 overall and finishes 1-8 in conference play.
 
Leading Gettysburg's offense, Howell tallied a career-high six points on a career-high five goals and one assist, and Kelly tied her career-high with five assists and she added one goal in the win. Keying the defense was Callie Gates (Basking Ridge, NJ/Ridge) with six groundballs and three caused turnovers, both game-highs.
 
Katie Ceglarski (Darien, CT/Darien) netted the first goal of the game just 36 seconds into the contest. Haverford's Liz Koelmel tied the game at 1-1 on a strike just 1:03 later.
 
In the span of 10 seconds, Gettysburg took a 3-1 lead. Howell scored first and then Kelly netted a goal off a draw control. Haverford scored again before the Bullets reeled off six unanswered goals to close the first half.
 
Alexandra Ewing (Baltimore, MD/Garrison Forest) and Jen Betts (Potomac, MD/Academy of the Holy Cross) each scored twice during the 6-0 half-closing run.
 
Gettysburg scored the first three goals of the second half to increase its advantage to 12-2. Katie Hagan (Media, PA/Cardinal O'Hara) and Howell each scored on assists from Kelly, and Ceglarski netted her second goal of the day.
 
Haverford rallied for three consecutive goals in the span of 4:16 to cut the lead to 12-5. Sarah Graves scored two unassisted strikes and Meg Twomey added another unassisted goal. However, Gettysburg held the Fords scoreless for the final 17:44 of the game.
 
Ending the game on another 6-0 run, Cristi Farrell (Broomall, PA/Academy of Notre Dame) scored twice and Howell netted her fourth and fifth tallies of the game. Kelly assisted the final three strikes of the day to give her five assists on the game, including Hagan's second goal which set the game's final outcome at 18-5.
 
Heather Kelley (Berwyn, PA/Conestoga) made nine saves in goal for her 15th win of the season while Chelsea Meerbach made 10 saves in the loss for the Fords.
 
Gettysburg returns to action on Tuesday at Cabrini for their final regular-season game. The game starts at 4 p.m.
