Box Score
CARLISLE, Pa. – Senior attacker Brian Pryor (Dallas, TX/St. Mark's) scored four times, and senior attacker Evan Gallant (Lutherville, MD/Loyola Blakefield) and junior midfielder Jared Harriman (Yarmouth, ME/Yarmouth) each recorded hat tricks as No. 2 Gettysburg defeated No. 13 Dickinson, 13-4, on Wednesday afternoon at Biddle Field. The win gives the Bullets the No. 1 seed and home-field advantage in next weekend's Centennial Conference (CC) playoffs.
Pryor added an assist for a game-high five points, and Gallant had one helper. Gettysburg (13-1, 7-0 CC) also got three assists from junior midfielder Greg Montgomery (Asheville, NC/St. Andrew's School [DE]). The Bullets' defense held Dickinson senior midfielder Brian Read, the CC's leading scorer off the scoreboard and snapped Read's 22-game point streak. Gettysburg also extended its winning streak against Dickinson to 32 straight games, and the team has also won 20 straight in conference play.
For the Red Devils (10-3, 5-2 CC), junior midfielder Brian Mohler opened the scoring in both halves, and junior goalie Kevin Riley made 16 saves, including seven in the first quarter.
Mohler opened the scoring with 9:03 left in the first quarter after a Bullets' defender slipped. He fired a shot from the right of Gettysburg junior goalie Pat Vaughan (Cockeysville, MD/Loyola Blakefield) that hit the far post and ricocheted in for a 1-0 Dickinson lead. The Red Devils threatened to up the lead to two goals four minutes later, but senior midfielder Flynn Burch fired a shot that hit the post. Vaughan made eight saves on the day.
Late in the quarter, Montgomery hit a post for Gettysburg, Pryor hit the crossbar, and Riley made a series of terrific saves with around two minutes left. Bullets' junior midfielder Kevin Freehill (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) made a nice pass from behind the net to Pryor right in front. It appeared that he had a wide-open net, but Riley reacted quickly to deny the chance.
With 48 seconds remaining in the opening frame, Riley was called for a push and sent to the box. Freshman netminder Russell Mathews came in cold, and Freehill took advantage off a pass from Montgomery to pull Gettysburg even at 1-1.
Just 10 seconds after the goal, Dickinson was flagged for the third of its seven penalties on the afternoon. Gettysburg was content to run out the clock, but opened the second quarter with the man advantage and went on the attack. Gallant controlled the ball behind the net and connected with Harriman in front, where he scored the first of his three goals just eight seconds into the quarter.
The Red Devils tied it up again two-and-a-half minutes later on an unassisted goal by junior midfielder Ed Lawless. The Bullets responded 26 seconds later when junior midfielder Ted Leonard (Wallingford, PA/Strath Haven) ripped a shot from the top of the box that was saved by Riley, but Pryor picked the rebound out of the air directly in front of the net and gave Gettysburg a lead it would never relinquish. Gallant scored on the man-up midway through the period, and junior midfielder Kenny Levene (Armonk, NY/Byram Hills) scored his first career goal, which proved to be the game winner. It was also the Bullets' third man-up goal of the game.
After 30 minutes of play, Gettysburg held a 5-2 lead, but Dickinson responded with two goals in the first 3:19 of the third quarter. Mohler struck for his second goal of the day, followed by a score from senior attacker Ed Boyd. Gettysburg answered with three goals over the final nine minutes of the quarter to take an 8-4 lead into the fourth quarter.
In the final frame, the Bullets tallied five more times to put the game away and end the contest on an 8-0 run. Gallant scored on an assist from Montgomery nearly five minutes in, and senior midfielder Chris Renzi (Fairport, NY/Fairport) won the ensuing faceoff. Gettysburg held the ball for over three minutes before sophomore attacker Trip Dyer (Ocean View, DE/Worcester Prep [MD]) scored his first goal of the game.
Gettysburg will close out the regular season on Saturday when the Bullets travel to Lancaster, Pa. to take on Franklin & Marshall. The team will be looking to lock up its second straight undefeated CC campaign. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
