GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Senior Shannon Kiry (Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) threw a five-inning one-hitter in game one and came on in relief to get the win in game two, giving Gettysburg a sweep of Washington (Md.) in Centennial Conference (CC) action on Saturday at Bobby Jones Field. Combined with Haverford's sweep of Muhlenberg and an Ursinus sweep of Dickinson, the sweep keeps the Bullets alive in the hunt for the final spot in the CC playoffs.
Kiry allowed just one hit and struck out four without walking a batter in the opener while her teammates pounded out 11 runs on nine hits and took advantage of six Shorewomen (14-22, 4-10 CC) errors. In the nightcap, Kiry came in with no one out in the third inning and held Washington to just one unearned run and four hits in five innings. She struck out two more and again did not walk a batter to improve to 15-6 on the season.
At the plate, the Bullets (24-13, 8-8 CC) got big days from several players. Freshman second baseman Jessica Wallick (Chambersburg, PA/Chambersburg) went 4-for-7 with two RBI and a run scored. Three of her hits came in game two. Sophomore center fielder Heather Sagaities (Hollidaysburg, PA/Hollidaysburg) had four hits and scored three times on the day, and classmate Abbe Miller (Spring City, PA/Owen J. Roberts) drove in three runs in the nightcap. Freshman designated player Tayler Cianciotta (Scotch Plains, NJ/Scotch Plains-Fanwood) also went 3-for-6 with two RBI and a run.
In the opener, Gettysburg jumped on the board with five runs in the first, four in the second and two more in the third. With Washington unable to respond, the game ended after five innings. Four hits, including consecutive RBI singles from Cianciotta, senior right fielder Margaret Hallahan (Huntingdon, PA/Huntingdon) and junior third baseman Megan Dean (Olney, MD/Our Lady of Good Counsel), and two Shorewomen errors accounted for the five-run outburst in the first. Two Washington runners reached on first-inning errors, and the Shorewomen put two runners on base again in the fourth, but they were unable to capitalize either time. The lone Washington hit in the game was a two-out single in the fourth by center fielder Stef Morgan.
Gettysburg entered the day needing a series of sweeps in addition to their own to stay alive for a postseason berth. The Bullets were nearly denied the opportunity own their own field, but managed a three-run rally in the bottom of the seventh to pull out the win.
Washington scored three runs in the second and appeared poised to add more in the third before Kiry came in and slammed the door. Designated player Kim Proctor led off with a single and went to second on a passed ball. Pitcher Emily Adams followed with a walk, but Kiry came on and retired the next three batters to end the threat. She allowed an unearned run in the fifth inning, but her teammates began the comeback in the bottom of the inning.
Freshman first baseman Erin Ober (Lutherville, MD/Dulaney) singled with one out and moved to second on a single by senior left fielder Katie Eiden (Silver Spring, MD/Georgetown Visitation [DC]). Two batters later, Miller drove them both in with a double.
The Bullets went into the bottom of the seventh, staring down a two-run deficit that had the potential to end their playoff quest. Washington retired the first two batters before Sagaities smacked a triple and scored on a single by Miller. Three straight singles plated junior pinch runner Meg Gorsuch (Mount Airy, MD/South Carroll) and freshman shortstop Nicole Yannotta (Whippany, NJ/Whippany Park) with the game-tying and game-winning runs.
Gettysburg will learn its playoff fate on Sunday. Swarthmore travels to Westminster, Md., to face McDaniel in a doubleheader. If either team sweeps, the Bullets win the tiebreaker and will take the fourth seed in the CC playoffs. Gettysburg wraps up the regular season on Tuesday with a non-conference doubleheader against Salisbury at Bobby Jones Field. The first pitch is slated for 3:30 p.m.
