GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Ellie Shihadeh (Malvern, PA/Conestoga) scored a sudden-victory overtime goal to lift No. 3 Gettysburg past No. 9 Franklin & Marshall 8-7 in Centennial Conference (CC) action on Wednesday.
With the victory, Gettysburg (10-0, 4-0 CC) ties the Bullet program record of 10 wins to start the season set by the 2003 squad. The Bullets have won 11 of the last 12 meetings with the Diplomats who fall to 7-2 overall and 3-1 in the CC.
After playing to a 7-7 tie after regulation and two overtime periods, Gettysburg won the game with 58 seconds remaining in the first sudden-victory overtime period. Shihadeh picked up a loose ball 10 meters from the net, drove to the cage, shot high and netted the game-winner.
Shihadeh scored two goals and added an assitst on the day while Megan Moore (Chestertown, MD/Gunston Day School) and Krissy Browning (Baldwin, MD/Fallston) each netted two goals. Jenn Kelly (Westbury, NY/Carle Place) tied Shihadeh for a game-high three points (one goal, two assists).
Jen Pritchard and Sarah Meisenberg each scored twice for the Diplomats and Kelly Cassels tallied one goal and two assists in the loss.
Gettysburg and F&M traded goals twice in first six minutes of the game. Kelly scored on a pass from Shihadeh 3:10 into the game to make the score 1-0. Just 37 seconds later, Pritchard tied the game at 1-1. Moore and Meisenberg traded unassisted tallies to knot the game at 2-2 with 5:52 left in the first half.
The Bullets opened a 4-2 lead on goals by Katie Hagan (Media, PA/Cardinal O'Hara) and Browning. However, F&M battled back to tie the game at 4-4 on a goal from Shannon Summers with 5:14 remaining until half.
Gettysburg took a 5-4 lead into the locker room when Moore struck with just 18 seconds remaining in the frame.
The second half was very similar to the first half as both teams traded goals often. Browning put Gettysburg up 6-4, 3:26 into the second half. F&M then got back-to-back goals from Cassels and Brenna Dolphin in the span of 4:23 to tie the game at 6-6.
Shihadeh tallied an unassisted goal, but the Diplomats retaliated with a strike from Pritchard with 11:55 left in the half. Both teams were held scoreless down the stretch as goalies Heather Kelley (Berwyn, PA/Conestoga) and Kamissa Mort each made two key saves to send the game to overtime.
After two scoreless overtime frames, Shihadeh's heroics ended the game in the first sudden-victory period.
Kelly made five saves to run her season record to 10-0 while Mort saved eight Bullet shots in the loss.
Gettysburg returns to action on Saturday at Washington (Md.). Game time is 5 p.m.
