GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The Bullets overcame an early deficit in both games of a doubleheader and won the opener, but a seventh-inning rally by Messiah in the nightcap prevented a Gettysburg sweep in non-conference action on Wednesday afternoon at Bobby Jones Field. The Bullets took the opener 10-7, but dropped a 6-4 decision in game two.
Freshman shortstop Nicole Yannotta (Whippany, NJ/Whippany Park) went 4-for-6 with a triple, three RBI and two runs scored for Gettysburg (16-5). Senior left fielder Katie Eiden (Silver Spring, MD/Georgetown Visitation [VA]) also had a big day, turning in a 3-for-7 performance with a triple and two RBI. She also scored twice.
The Falcons (15-11) combined for 21 hits in the two games. Sophomore pitcher/outfielder Lana Trotter was 4-for-8 on the afternoon with three RBI and three runs scored. All three of her hits in game one were doubles. Freshman catcher Amy Bowie had three hits, an RBI and two runs in the first game, and junior third baseman Ashleigh Wykoff was a perfect 3-for-3 with a run and an RBI in the second game. Junior shortstop/center fielder Jessica DeBoer performed well in both games, going a combined 4-for-8 with an RBI and four runs scored.
Both teams helped the opponents' cause by combining for 13 errors on the day, and the Falcons put the pressure on the Bullets by pounding out six doubles and a triple in game one. The first two doubles put the visitors on the board in the top of the second inning. Bowie and Trotter led off the inning with back-to-back doubles to make it 1-0. The team would strike for three more in the third. DeBoer led off with a double. Two batters later, she scored on a triple by Bowie. Trotter followed with an RBI double. She would eventually score on an error.
The Bullets answered with three runs in the bottom of the third to pull within one at 4-3. With the help of an error and a passed ball, Gettysburg loaded the bases. Sophomore catcher Abbe Miller (Spring City, PA/Owen J. Roberts) drove in a run with a walk. Yannotta followed with a two-run single up the middle.
The home team would double that production in the bottom of the fourth inning to gain a lead it would not give up, even though Messiah scored three runs in its final two at bats. After the first two Bullets were set down in the bottom of the fourth, a walk and an error on a fielder's choice put two runners on for Eiden, who cleared the bases with a triple to right center. Sophomore center fielder Heather Sagaities (Hollidaysburg, PA/Hollidaysburg) drove her in with a single to right. Gettysburg scored three more runs, all unearned, before the rally ended, and the team hung on for a 10-7 victory.
The second game appeared that it would follow much the same script as the first. The Falcons scored a single unearned run in each of the first two innings to take a 2-0 lead. Gettysburg countered with a pair of scores in the second inning. Yannotta hit a leadoff triple to right field and scored on a single through the left side by freshman third baseman Jessica Wallick (Chambersburg, PA/Chambersburg). She scored later in the inning, when junior designated player Meg Gorsuch (Mount Airy, MD/South Carroll) reached on an error.
After Gettysburg tied the game, things settled down over the next four innings. The Bullets did manage to scratch out the go-ahead run in the bottom of the fifth inning, however. Freshman first baseman Erin Ober (Lutherville, MD/Dulaney) reached on an infield single, stole second and went to third on a sacrifice bunt by Eiden. Two batters later, Yannotta single up the middle to break the deadlock.
Messiah got the leadoff hitter to third base in the fourth and sixth innings, and the second hitter in the fifth inning also made it that far, but none of them scored. With darkness falling, freshman designated hitter Kati Ehly led off with the first of four straight Falcon singles. She carried the tying run across the plate, and three teammates came in behind her. The top of the seventh ended with Messiah up 6-3, but the Bullets added a run on an RBI single by Miller that scored Eiden.
The Bullets will return to action on Saturday when they travel to Haverford for a Centennial Conference doubleheader. The first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
