PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Gettysburg College volleyball team played in a pair of sweeps on the first day of the Carnegie Mellon Crossover on Friday at Skibo Gym, falling to Carnegie Mellon in a closely contested 30-24, 32-30, 34-32 match before bouncing back to down John Carroll, 31-29, 30-27, 30-20. Carnegie Mellon stopped a six-game winning streak for the Bullets, but Gettysburg (9-6) has won nine of its last 11 matches.
Against Carnegie Mellon (5-7), senior libero
Steph Vial (Hanover, Pa./Delone Catholic) paced five Bullets with double-digit digs. She had 23 for the match. Freshman setter
Amanda Krampf (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg) had 19 digs, and she added 28 assists for her 10th double-double of the season. She would pick up her 11th with 40 assists and 15 digs against John Carroll. Junior right side
Lauren Thul (Flemington, N.J./Hunterdon Central) narrowly missed a double-double of her own, recording nine kills and 12 digs. She also served up three aces to tie freshman
Jade Dunhour (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle-Antrim) for the team lead, while senior middle hitter
Hillary Prutzman (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) led the way with three block assists.
In the nightcap, Thul also put together her second double-double of the day with 12 kills and 18 digs. Sophomore outside hitter
Meghan McConville (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) knocked down a team-high 14 kills with four errors on 28 attempts to hit .357 for the match, and Vial was again the team's leader in digs with 21. Prutzman was credited with five blocks and McConville had four. Senior middle hitter
Caitlyn Barr (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) hit .438 for the match with nine kills and two errors on 18 swings.
Gettysburg will finish the tournament portion of its 2006 schedule on Saturday when the Bullets take on Geneva and Otterbein in the second day of the Carnegie Mellon Crossover. The Geneva match begins at 10 a.m., and the Otterbein match is set for 2 p.m.
