GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Sophomore guard Dan Capkin (Wynnewood, Pa./Lower Merion) scored 16 points to lead Gettysburg to a 65-60 victory over Haverford in Centennial Conference (CC) action on Saturday afternoon at Bream Gymnasium. Trailing by 12 points with 8:28 left in the game, the Bullets went on a 16-0 run that propelled them to victory.

Sophomore guard Corey Dorsey (Frederick, Md./St. Johns at Prospect Hall) and senior center Brian Sateja (Morristown, N.J./Delbarton School) each tallied 14 points for the Bullets (5-9, 3-6 CC). Senior forward Julius Redd (Gaithersburg, Md./Magruder) grabbed a team-high six rebounds in the win. The Fords (6-8, 5-3 CC) were led by 16 points from Mike Fratangelo and 14 points from Chaz Thomas.

Trailing 53-41 with 8:28 remaining, Gettysburg started its 16-0 run with a 3-pointer by sophomore guard Chris Nevolo (Neshanic Station, N.J./Somerville). Sateja added one free throw before Nevolo drilled a jumper to cut the score to 53-47. The next time down the floor, Dorsey set his feet and swished a trey with 6:27 left on the clock.

Capkin tied the game at 5:59 with a 3-pointer, and on the next two offensive possessions for the Bullets, Dorsey and Redd each hit a pair from the charity stripe to take a 57-53 lead. The lead was Gettysburg's first of the game. Ending the run, Fratangelo hit two free throws with 3:01 remaining to make the score 57-55 in the Bullets' favor. Ray Brown was able to tie the game at 2:38 after a layup in the paint.

However, the Bullets were able to convert on 5-of-6 free throw attempts down the stretch to hold off the Fords for the 65-60 win.

Haverford raced off to a 6-0 lead in the opening minute of play on a 3-pointer by Fratangelo and a converted three-point play by Brown. The Fords extended their lead to eight points, 15-7, 5:07 into the half after Thomas drove to the basket and made a layup. Gettysburg pulled within two points, 23-21, on a layup by Capkin with 3:59 left in the half. The Fords would keep the lead and close out the half on a 10-3 run to make the score 33-24 when the halftime whistle blew.

The Fords opened the second-half with a hot hand as Fratangelo and David Nowaki each hit 3-pointers en route to a 40-28 advantage with 17:16 remaining. The Bullets chipped away at the lead as Sateja tallied four points, and Redd slammed an emphatic dunk to cut Haverford's lead to 42-36 with 14:47 remaining.

Neither team scored for a stretch of 4:48 until three triples by the Fords extended their lead. The Bullets proceeded to go on their 16-0 run en route to victory.

Gettysburg shot 50.0 percent, while Haverford shot 46.0 percent from the field in the game. Both teams shot well from beyond the arc, as the Bullets converted on 60.0 percent their attempts and the Fords made 55.6 percent of their 3-point chances.

The Fords out rebounded the Bullets by a 28-23 margin, but turned the ball over 26 times in the game. Gettysburg committed 21 turnovers in the contest. The Bullets made 17-of-20 free throw attempts in the game, all in the second half. The Fords only went to the free throw line seven times in the game.

Gettysburg returns to action on Wednesday at home against Dickinson for a Centennial Conference matchup. Tip-off is set for 8:00 p.m.
