WESTMINSTER, Md. – Katy Powell netted 19 points to lead McDaniel to a 60-55 victory over Gettysburg in Centennial Conference (CC) action on Saturday at the Gill Center. The Green Terror have now won 10 consecutive games as well as 10 straight games over the Bullets.
Freshman guard
Allie Drechsler (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) scored a career-high 21 points, and senior forward
Katie Reilly (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) tallied a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds in the loss. Sophomore guard
Margaret White (Burke, Va./James W. Robinson) also scored 11 points for Gettysburg.
The Bullets (11-6, 8-3 CC) opened the game on a 7-0 run with three points from Reilly and a pair of jumpers from Drechsler. A three-point play from Heather Thompson sparked a 6-0 burst by McDaniel that pulled the hosts within one with 16:01 showing on the clock.
Trailing 12-11 with 12:37 to play in the opening half, Ali Moreland finished a fast-break layup to give the Green Terror its first lead of the game. After trading baskets, Gettysburg reclaimed the lead, 18-16, on a layup by freshman forward
Ali Goldsmith (Farmingdale, N.J./Howell) with 8:30 remaining in the first half. McDaniel proceed to go on a 9-0 run over the next 3 minutes, 41 seconds to take a 25-18 lead and never trailed for the remainder of the game. Jamie Morningstar, who scored a career-high 14 points in the game, capped the burst with the first of her three 3-pointers on the day.
Five free throws and a pair of layups by Drechsler pulled the Bullets within 28-27 before Katy Powell hit the second of her two final-minute 3-pointers to push the Green Terror advantage to four at the break.
A trey by White 29 seconds into the second half once again trimmed the McDaniel lead to one before the Green Terror reeled off 13 of the next 16 points to take a 44-33 lead with 13 minutes to play.
After a Thompson 3-pointer put the Green Terror on top 49-37 with 7:37 remaining, four Reilly free throws and 3-pointers from both freshman forward
Courtney Fields (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls) and Drechsler keyed an 11-1 run that pulled the Bullets within 50-52 with 4:02 left in the game.
Thompson hit two free throws, and Moreland converted 1-of-2 from the stripe to stretch the lead back to 55-50 with 1:50 remaining.
After Thompson answered two Drechsler free throws with two of her own with 35 seconds remaining, Drechsler converted a basket-and-foul play to pull the Bullets back within 57-55.
McDaniel thwarted Gettysburg's final offensive attempts and hit three more free throws to ice the game and set its final margin at 60-55.
The Bullets will return to action on Tuesday at Richard Stockton for a non-conference matchup. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
