GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Freshman
Kate Yoder (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus) knocked down 11 kills on Wednesday night, but the effort wasn't enough to knock off 11th-ranked Haverford College as the Fords walked out of Bream Gymnasium with a 3-0 (30-27, 30-28, 30-21) victory in Centennial Conference volleyball action.
Haverford (24-0, 6-0 CC) remained perfect on the season and picked up its first-ever victory on Gettysburg's (13-10, 3-2 CC) home court, but it didn't come easy for the visitors as the Bullets pushed out to early leads in each of the final two games. Gettysburg took a 5-2 advantage on a Yoder kill in the second game only to see the Fords regain a two-point margin a short time later. Haverford seemed to have an answer for each Bullet rally, and despite kills by Yoder to knot the second frame at 26-26 and 27-27, the Fords got back-to-back kills to seal the game-two win.
The hosts once again held sway early on in the third game, jumping ahead by five points twice, but Haverford once again broke the momentum, quickly turning a 7-2 deficit into a 12-9 advantage. The Bullets would get no closer than two points the rest of the way.
Yoder finished the night with a .333 hitting percentage, connecting on 11 of her 27 attack attempts and committing just two errors. Sophomore
Kristina Mercier (Baltimore, Md./Mount de Sales Academy) tallied eight kills, while senior
Katie Heffner (Easton, Pa./Easton) contributed seven kills and 19 digs.
Defensively, Gettysburg was led by sophomore
Mekenna Sigai (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep.) with 20 digs. Sophomore setter
Amanda Krampf (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg) finished the night with 35 assists, eight digs, and three kills.
The Bullets host a pair of conference foes on Saturday, October 13, beginning with Washington College at noon and followed by Swarthmore College at 3 p.m.
