GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Seniors
Katie Heffner (Easton, Pa./Easton) and
Katie Potochney (Roselle, N.J./Roselle Catholic) made the most of Senior Day at Bream Gymnasium, pounding down 29 kills and tallying 20 digs, respectively, to lead the Gettysburg College volleyball team to a pair of Centennial Conference sweeps against Washington College and Swarthmore College on Saturday afternoon.
The Bullets fought off a tough crew of Shorewomen to take the first mach 3-0 (30-28, 31-29, 30-22), while against the Garnet, the hosts came out on fire and walked away with another 3-0 (30-7, 30-17, 30-27) victory. Gettysburg improved to 15-10 overall and 5-2 in league play, while Washington and Swarthmore fell to 9-12, 1-5 CC and 8-14, 3-4 CC, respectively.
Victory was never a sure thing in the beginning as the Bullets fell behind by as many as seven points in the opening game against Washington. Trailing19-12, Head Coach Alexa Keckler called a timeout and the strategy paid off as Gettysburg went off on a 5-0 run to pull to within two (19-17). The Shorewomen continued to hold the lead, but with freshman
Kate Yoder (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus) holding serve, the Bullets reeled off six unanswered points to set up match point at 29-27. Following a kill by the visitors, Heffner gave the hosts the come-from-behind victory by smacking down an overpass. Game two played out similarly as Gettysburg trailed by as many as five, but once again, the Orange & Blue bounced back to knot the game at 22-22 on a
Kristin Kotewicz (Columbia, Md./River Hill) service ace. Washington regained the advantage only to see Heffner lead her team back to the front as the senior tallied a solo block and back-to-back kills on consecutive possessions, giving Gettysburg a 27-24 lead. The Shorewomen stuck with it, tying the game at 27-27 and 29-29, but back-to-back kills by
Molly Barrett (Medfield, Mass./Medfield) and
Kristina Mercier (Baltimore, Md./Mount de Sales Academy) sealed the win for the hosts. The Bullets didn't have much trouble in game three, racing out to a 12-5 lead and maintaining at least a three-point lead down the stretch.
Heffner finished the opening match with 14 kills, seven digs, and four total blocks, while Yoder was nearly as potent on the net, tallying 13 kills and five total blocks. Sophomore
Amanda Krampf (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg) notched a double-double with 41 assists and 11 digs and classmate
Mekenna Sigai (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep.) led the defense with 20 digs. Potochney and Kotewicz were also major contributors on defense with 11 and 15 digs, respectively.
After the battle with Washington, the Bullets came out with bad intentions in the second match of the day, handing Swarthmore its most lop-sided loss of the season in game one. The Garnet held tough in the second and third frames, opening with a five-point lead in the former and leading 24-23 in the latter, but it was Gettysburg's day to shine as the team closed game two with a 15-3 run and locked down the decisive win in game three thanks to three hitting errors by the visitors.
Heffner once again led the way, hitting 15 kills with only two errors in 29 attempts and added 10 digs for the double-double. Mercier picked up a double-double with 11 kills and 13 digs, as did Krampf with 35 assists and 11 digs. Sigai contributed 11 digs as the team's libero, while Potochney added nine.
