Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The Gettysburg College men's soccer team honored its six seniors before the game, then delivered six goals in a big 6-0 Centennial Conference victory over Dickinson College before a large crowd at Clark Field Saturday evening.

Gettysburg (10-5, 5-2 CC), which has won its last six matches now finds itself locked in a three-way tie with Muhlenberg (5-2) and Johns Hopkins (5-2) for second place in the Centennial Conference standings. Franklin & Marshall, which defeated Hopkins 2-1 in overtime Saturday night, sits in first place at 6-1.

The Bullets' six-goal outburst was a season-high, and it marked the team's highest offensive output since their 6-0 victory over Penn State-Berks last Sept. 20.

Junior Chris Bayon (Langhorne, Pa./Lawrenceville School (N.J.)) scored two goals while senior Matt Varner (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) and junior Brandon Bell (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) posted one goal and two assists apiece for Gettysburg, which has outscored its opponents 13-0 over its last three matches.

Dickinson (11-2-2, 3-2-2 CC), ranked No. 4 in the latest NSCAA Middle-Atlantic Region poll, suffered just its second loss of the season.

Varner put Gettysburg on the scoreboard in the fifth minute, rebounding home a goalie-deflected shot from Bell. Then in the 20th minute, Bell touched off a three-goal Bullet scoring spree that lasted just over eight minutes. Streaking downfield on the right wing, Bell took a pass from Varner and slotted the ball across goal and into the upper left corner to make it 2-0.

Just over a minute later, Bayon accepted a tap from Varner off an indirect kick and drilled in a shot just inside the right post. Sophomore Geoff Menge (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West) capped Gettysburg's big first half when he converted a penalty kick in the 28th minute, giving the Bullets a 4-0 lead at the break.

Gettysburg needed just 1:05 to strike in the second half, with Bayon heading home a long pass from senior Brad Tabor (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon) for his team-leading 10th goal of the season. Senior Jesse Gemberling-Johnson (Wyndmoor, Pa./Christopher Dock) provided the finishing touches in the 60th minute when, from the left flank, he took a cross from Bell and one-timed a shot into a wide-open net.

Senior Matt Langston (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin East) stopped four shots over the opening 81 minutes to earn the win in goal while staying perfect at 7-0 on the season. Junior Adam Finkel (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) played the final nine minutes and stopped one shot as the Bullets logged their third straight shutout and their seventh clean sheet of the year.

Rodrigo Barboza made six saves for the Red Devils.

Gettysburg returns to action on Wednesday, when it visits Johns Hopkins University at 4 p.m. in another Centennial Conference showdown.
