GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The Gettysburg College women's soccer team picked up its third consecutive Centennial Conference win on Saturday afternoon, downing 22nd-ranked Swarthmore College 1-0 on an
Erin Miller (Massapequa, N.Y./St. Anthony's) goal in the 75th minute. The victory improves the Bullets league record to 5-3 this fall and keeps the squad in the hunt for a postseason berth with two critical regular season matches remaining.
Gettysburg, now 6-9-1 overall on the season, came into the day in a tie with Franklin & Marshall College (8-5-2, 5-4 CC) for sixth-place in the Centennial standings, trailing Muhlenberg College (7-5-3, 4-3-1 CC) and Haverford College (8-6-1, 5-2-1 CC) by one point. The Bullet victory, coupled with Franklin & Marshall's 1-0 win over Muhlenberg, lifts Gettysburg and F&M into a tie for the fifth and final conference playoff spot. Haverford remains a point ahead in fourth place, thanks to a 2-1 overtime win over Dickinson College (8-7-1, 3-4-1 CC).
Swarthmore (11-2, 6-2 CC) slipped into third-place in the Centennial standings, but they held the advantage over Gettysburg for the majority of the afternoon, out-shooting the hosts 16-6 and taking four more corner kicks (6-2). Each offensive opportunity by the Garnet was squashed time and again by the Bullet defense anchored by goalie
Danielle St. Pierre (Londonderry, N.H./Trinity), who stopped nine shots en route to her sixth shutout of the season.
Following a scoreless opening half, Gettysburg picked up all the offense it would need with just over 15 minutes remaining as Miller took a feed from senior
Shaina Wright (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg) and connected on her third goal of the season into the lower left of the net at 74:15. It marked the second straight match Miller has scored in, while Wright picked up her team-best fifth assist of the fall.
The Bullets face a pair of teams lurking in the shadows of the playoff race beginning with a home contest against Dickinson on Tuesday, Oct. 23 at 7 p.m. Next weekend on Oct. 27, Gettysburg wraps up the regular season at Muhlenberg also at 7 p.m.
