GETTYSBURG, Pa. – A three-goal outburst over a 5:51 span early in the second half lifted the No. 19-ranked Gettysburg College field hockey team to a 3-1 Centennial Conference victory over Dickinson College Tuesday afternoon at Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium.
With the win, the Bullets (11-5, 7-2 CC) won their fourth game in a row and clinched a berth in the upcoming Centennial Conference playoffs. Dickinson (7-9, 4-5 CC) had its three-game winning streak snapped and was eliminated from conference playoff contention.
Gettysburg, which learned of its national ranking earlier in the day, limited Dickinson to one shot in the opening half, but goalie Amanda West saved all three Bullet shots on goal over the opening 35 minutes and the halftime scoreboard read 0-0. However, reigning Centennial Conference Defensive Player of the Week Nikki Dyer (Kildeer, Ill./Stevenson) kicked off Gettysburg's scoring spree when she collected a rebound and fired it into the right side of the cage with 26:13 on the clock for her fourth goal of the year. It was the third game in a row in which Dyer, a defender, scored a goal and the fourth straight game that she recorded a point.
Sophomore Lexie Hearn (Old Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) followed up with a pair of goals to break open the game for the Bullets. She pushed in a shot from the left post after a Christi Farrell (Broomall, Pa./Academy of Notre Dame) shot was deflected off a defender, and she converted a shot in transition 1:31 later, taking a feed from junior Savannah Ruth (New Oxford, Pa./New Oxford) at the right post and knocking in her fifth goal of the season. It was her first collegiate multi-goal game.
Dickinson got on the scoreboard with 1:07 left when Katelynn Bias scored off a rebound, but Gettysburg claimed possession following the restart and was able to run off the clock without Dickinson attempting another shot.
The Bullets out-shot the Devils 16-5 in the second half and 22-6 for the game.
West finished with eight saves while senior Katherine Corkhill (Paoli, Pa./Academy of Notre Dame) stopped three shots for the Bullets while adding to her school record for victories with her 50th career win.
Gettysburg plays its regular season finale on Friday, when it visits Muhlenberg College at 7 p.m. in another Centennial Conference match.
