GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Junior
Erin Miller (Massapequa, N.Y./St. Anthony's) continued her dazzling play of late by helping the Gettysburg College women's soccer team pick up a 1-0 decision over visiting Dickinson College in Centennial Conference action at Clark Field on Tuesday night. The victory lifts the rejuvenated Bullets' record to 6-3 in league play this fall, securing a berth in the five-team league tournament slated to begin next week.
After starting the season 3-9, Gettysburg is unbeaten in its last five matches (4-0-1), including four victories over league opposition. The victory over Dickinson put the Bullets in fourth place in the Centennial standings, one point behind third-place Swarthmore College (11-2-1, 6-2-1 CC) and one point ahead of fifth-place Haverford College (8-6-2, 5-2-2 CC), who played to a 1-1 tie on Tuesday. The top five teams in the league advance to the league tournament which begins on Wednesday, Oct. 31, and continues through Nov. 3-4.
Against Dickinson (8-8-1, 3-5-1 CC), Gettysburg came out with intensity in the opening half, forcing a handful of corner kicks and five shots in the opening 30 minutes. Those opportunities paved the way for the opening goal as sophomore
Mary Peters (Cranbury, N.J./Princeton Day School) fed Miller through the middle where she beat the Red Devil defenders back to the goal and slid a shot past the diving keeper on the left at 30:10. It was Miller's team-leading fourth goal of the season, while Peters notched her first point of the fall.
Dickinson did not go without its opportunities in the contest as the Centennial's leading scorer, Lisa Nichols, fired off six shots in the direction of the goal. Two would-be goals were stopped by Bullet goalie
Danielle St. Pierre (Londonderry, N.H./Trinity), the first with a dive to the left in the 42nd minute, and the second just eight minutes into the second stanza. St. Pierre finished with five saves on the night en route to her fourth shutout in five matches and seventh overall this season.
Gettysburg controlled the flow of the match throughout the night, firing off seven more shots (16-9) and taking 10 more corner kicks (12-2). The defense, led by
Tara Gaston (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) and
Kelly Burke (Greenwood Village, Colo./St. Mary's Academy), played a key role in neutralizing the Red Devil attack, while Peters did a stand-up job of marking Nichols throughout the contest.
The Bullets aim to put an exclamation point on the 2007 regular season with a road trip to Muhlenberg on Saturday, Oct. 27, at 7 p.m.
