BALTIMORE – Johns Hopkins scored twice over a five-minute span midway through the second half as the No. 20-ranked Blue Jays rallied to hand the Gettysburg College men's soccer team a 2-1 setback in Centennial Conference action Wednesday afternoon at Homewood Field.
The two teams entered the game locked in a three-way tie for second place in the conference standings, but with the win Johns Hopkins (14-1, 6-2) temporarily took sole possession of second and clinched a Centennial Conference playoff berth. Gettysburg (10-6, 5-3 CC), which saw its six-match winning streak come to an end, is now tied for third with Muhlenberg (5-2 CC), which visits fifth-place Swarthmore (4-2-1 CC) Wednesday evening.
Sophomore Ryan Shaffer (Biglerville, Pa./Biglerville) spotted the Bullets a 1-0 lead when the defender found the back of the net in the 39th minute, winning a one-on-one with the keeper for his first collegiate goal. Hopkins held a 7-4 shot advantage in the opening half but senior goalie Matt Langston (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin East) made one save as Gettysburg took its one-goal advantage into the break.
The Blue Jays tightened things up defensively in the second half and prevented the Bullets from taking another shot. On the other end of the field, Scott Bukoski pulled Hopkins even on a penalty kick in the 69th minute for his 17th goal of the season before David Drake followed up with the game-winner, his 11th tally of the year.
Langston, who suffered his first loss of the season since starting 7-0, finished with six saves while Matt Mierley picked up two saves for Johns Hopkins.
Gettysburg closes out its regular season and Centennial Conference schedule on Saturday, when it visits McDaniel College at 1 p.m.
