HAVERFORD, Pa. – Freshman
Casey Harper (Ocean View, N.J./Ocean City) found the right time to pick up her first career score, notching the match's only goal in the 56th minute en route to lifting fifth-seed Gettysburg College to a 1-0 victory over No. 4 Haverford College (9-7-2) in the first round of the Centennial Conference Tournament on Wednesday afternoon.
The Bullets, now 8-10-1 overall this season, advance to the semifinals of the CC Tournament hosted by Johns Hopkins University (12-4-2, 8-1-1 CC) on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 3-4. Gettysburg will square off with the top-seeded Blue Jays in the opening contest on Saturday beginning at 5 p.m. The other semifinal contest pits the second seed, Ursinus College (11-4-3, 7-1-2 CC), against No. 3 Swarthmore College (12-2-1, 7-2-1 CC) at 7:30 p.m.
Gettysburg forced the action early and often against the Fords, taking a pair of corner kicks and five shots in the opening 20 minutes. Two shots by senior
Shaina Wright (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg) nearly found the mark, but Haverford keeper Lindsay Festa made a pair of saves to preserve a scoreless first half.
Following another shot by Wright to open the second stanza, the Fords mounted some offensive pressure with two shots and two corner kicks over a one-minute span. Bullet keeper
Danielle St. Pierre (Londonderry, N.H./Trinity) was up to the task at hand, however, stopping a shot by Ryan Hedrick at 52:59 for one of her two second-half saves.
With the defense holding firm, Harper put the visitors on the board at 55:36, heading home a pass from junior
Caitlin McCarthy (Darnestown, Md./Holy Child) into the top left corner of the goal.
Gettysburg managed just two more shots for the remainder of the game, including one by
Colleen Stuart (Centennial, Colo./Arapahoe) which was stopped by Festa in the 62nd minute, while Haverford managed a pair of attempts in the final 10 minutes. The first by Maura Schiefer was saved by St. Pierre at 82:34, while the last shot of the match by Hana Rosen went high at 86:56.
The Bullets held the edge in shots 11-6, while Haverford led in corner kicks 3-2. The Gettysburg defensive effort once again held the spotlight, picking up its eighth shutout of the season and preserving its fourth one-goal victory in its last six matches.
