Box Score
GRANTHAM, Pa. – The Gettysburg College field hockey team nearly came up with the upset at 10th-ranked Messiah College, but the host Falcons received a goal late in the second half to pull away from the visitors for a 3-2 decision in non-conference action at Anderson Field.
All five of Gettysburg's (7-5) losses have come against foes ranked among the National Field Hockey Coaches' Association top 20, with three of those setbacks being decided by just one goal. Messiah (7-3) jumped out to a 1-0 lead heading into the break and added another goal early in the second half to put the Bullets down 2-0.
The Falcons' lead didn't last long, however, as sophomore Lauren Woodman (Denver, Colo./Kent Denver) sliced the deficit in half with her third goal of the fall just a minute after the Falcon goal. Gettysburg continued the momentum with another quick tally as Vanessa Pabon (New Oxford, Pa./New Oxford) picked up her first career goal via an assist from Savannah Ruth (New Oxford, Pa./New Oxford) 52 seconds after Woodman's score, knotting the game at 2-2. The Bullets doubled their shot total in the final period and forced a pair of penalty corners, but the hosts picked up the game-clinching goal at 52:09 and held on for the win.
Senior goalie Katherine Corkhill (Paoli, Pa./Academy of Notre Dame) came up with another outstanding outing against Messiah, notching a season-high 14 saves in the loss. Last season, Corkhill made a career-high 16 saves in a 1-0 setback to Messiah.
Gettysburg returns home for its next showing on Friday, Oct. 12. The Bullets will battle
Centennial Conference foe Washington College in the friendly confines of Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium at 3 p.m.
