Box Score
ARLINGTON, Va. – Sophomore
Courtney Fields (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls) notched her third career double-double with 12 points and a career-high 15 rebounds, but the Gettysburg College women's basketball team dropped an 84-62 decision to host Marymount University at the 20th Annual Marymount Tip-Off Classic on Friday.
Fields finished 6-of-18 from the field for Gettysburg (0-1), while junior
Margaret White (Burke, Va./James W. Robinson) tied her for team scoring honors with a dozen points on 5-of-9 shooting from the field, including a pair of three-point baskets. Fields nearly topped her previous career high of 11 boards with 10 rebounds alone on the defensive glass, adding five on offense. Sophomore
Nicole Dobranski (Albertson, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) tallied nine points and seven rebounds for the visitors.
The Bullets grabbed the early lead with two of the first three baskets coming from Fields and fellow sophomore
Allie Drechsler (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill), but Marymount (1-0) ran off a 12-0 run to grab the upper hand at 15-4. Gettysburg was quick to retaliate with its own run, pulling to within one (17-16) with a 12-2 spurt down to 8:35. Following a series of ties, Dobranski converted a lay-up to give the visitors the lead at 25-23 with four minutes remaining in the half. Another run by Marymount regained the advantage for the hosts, but White pulled the Bullets to within four (35-31) at the half with her first three of the game.
The Saints continued to hold sway in the early goings of the second half, but they couldn't shake the pesky Bullets, who pulled to within one (39-38) on an
Ali Goldsmith (Farmingdale, N.J./Howell) three-pointer at 16:48. Marymount built their lead to seven twice shortly thereafter, but an old-fashioned three-point play by senior
Megan Hartman (Lewistown, Pa./Indian Valley) followed by a lay-up by Fields sliced the margin back to two (50-48) with just under 12 minutes to play. Unfortunately for Gettysburg, that would be as close as the team would get as the Saints pulled away for good with a 17-3 run over a four-minute span at the tail-end of the half, before settling for the final 22-point victory.
Shooting and turnovers played a key role in the Bullets' demise as the team made just over 31 percent of their field goal attempts (25-of-80) and 7-of-16 free throws, in addition to committing- 20 turnovers. On the other side, Marymount had no problem finding the basket on its home court, converting 44.9 percent of its shots from the field (31-of-69) and 16-of-21 free throws.
Hartman and Drechsler each finished with eight points, while Goldsmith picked up seven points and five rebounds. Hartman also added five rebounds and tied Fields for the team-lead with three assists.
Three Saints reached double-figures in the game, led by Kathleen Brown who was 11-of-18 from the field for a game-high 23 points. Kathryn Wilson added 17 points and seven rebounds, while Meredith Levison chipped in with 13 tallies. Brown also contributed a team-high nine rebounds, including six on the offensive glass.
Gettysburg resumes play at the Marymount Tournament by taking on SUNY-Geneseo on Saturday, Nov. 17, at 1 p.m. The Blue Knights lost to Gwynedd-Mercy 63-57 earlier on Friday.
