Box Score
YORK, Pa. – Junior guard Dan Capkin (Wynnewood, Pa./Lower Merion) scored a game-high 24 points and handed out all of his career-high-tying six assists in the second half while junior forward Corey Dorsey (Frederick, Md./St. John's at Prospect Hall) added 21 points as Gettysburg defeated York (Pa.) College 74-65 in a non-conference outing at Charles Wolf Gymnasium Tuesday evening in the Bullets' first road game of the season.
With the win, Gettysburg improved to 3-0 for the first time since 2003-04. The Bullets' third win that season also marked the last time Gettysburg defeated York, who had won the last three meetings.
Gettysburg led from start to finish, although York (1-2) trailed by double digits only once.
Preseason all-America forward Chad McGowan led the Spartans with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Levi Winters (14), Nate Lankford (10), and Nick Brady (10) also reached double figures for the home team.
Freshman center Andrew Powers (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown) posted his first career double-double for the Bullets, scoring 12 points and pulling down 11 rebounds. Junior forward Joe Spierenburg (Chambersburg, Pa./St. Maria Goretti (Md.)) added 10 points, eight rebounds, and three blocks while coming up with a series of big plays down the stretch.
Gettysburg never trailed after Capkin dropped in a fastbreak lay-up 49 seconds into the game. A McGowan jumper made it 10-8 with 13:29 left in the opening half before a pair of Powers lay-ups and a Capkin bucket accounted for a 6-1 Bullet surge, upping Gettysburg's lead to seven (16-9) with 10:41 on the clock.
York scored the next five points to narrow the gap to two, and it was still a two-point game with 8:30 remaining in the half before Capkin and Dorsey scored all of their team's points over a 9-1 run that gave the Bullets their largest lead of the game (27-17) with 4:27 to go. Dorsey hit a pair of free throws and a fading jumper from the right elbow during the stretch while Capkin drained a three-pointer from the right baseline and nailed a pull-up jumper in the lane that gave his team its double-digit lead.
The Spartans ended the half strong, however, and a 12-3 run had York within one (30-29) after a Brady three-pointer with 55 ticks showing. But the Bullets scored the last four points of the half, and a Matt Presby (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan) lay-up just before the buzzer put Gettysburg up 34-29 at the break.
The Bullets pulled ahead by as much as eight early in the second half, but a 6-0 York surge brought the Spartans to within two (44-42) following a McGowan jumper. However, a 7-1 Gettysburg run, capped by a Dorsey trey, put the Bullets up nine (54-45) with 11:33 remaining. York refused to go away, however, and a Winters bucket made it 61-58 with 6:41. But that's when the all-around play of Spierenburg helped Gettysburg pull away.
Spierenburg started by converting a lay-up with 6:24, then blocked a shot at the other end of the court. He then fed Powers for a lay-up underneath that upped Gettysburg's advantage to seven (65-58) with 5:41 to go, and the Spartans were unable to reduce the deficit under five the rest of the way.
A pair of Winters free throws with 1:52 left made it a six-point game (71-65), but the Bullets blanked York from that point as the Spartans missed their final six field goal attempts. In the meantime, Dorsey made 1-of-2 free throws while junior guard Chris Nevolo (Neshanic Station, N.J./Somerville) hit a pair from the charity stripe with 18 ticks showing to set the final score.
Gettysburg out-rebounded York 38-31 and shot 52.7% from the field.
The Bullets return to the hardwood on Wednesday, Nov. 28, when they visit Dickinson College at 7:30 p.m. in their Centennial Conference opener.
