Box Score

CARLISLE, Pa. – The Gettysburg College women's basketball team committed 30 turnovers leading to 28 points for host Dickinson College as the Red Devils defended their territory with a 69-55 Centennial Conference victory on Tuesday night. The setback dropped the Bullets to 2-3 overall and evened their conference record at 1-1, while Dickinson improved to 3-1 and 2-0 in the league this season.

The 30 turnovers was the most by Gettysburg in nearly four seasons dating back to a 32-turnover night in a 76-57 loss to Johns Hopkins University on Feb. 18, 2004. Despite the miscues, the visitors jumped out to a six-point lead (16-10) just over eight minutes into the game following a pair of free throws by freshman Caitlin Moser (Wyomissing, Pa./Wyomissing) at 11:40.

Three turnovers led to back-to-back Red Devil buckets, and following a lay-up by Courtney Fields (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls), the hosts took the lead for good on a three-pointer and a jumper by Brooke Muller, making it 19-18 with 8:32 remaining in the first half. The Bullets stayed within striking range, trailing by just five (27-22) with 1:48 in the period, but with the seconds ticking away, Muller took the ball to the rack and connected on a lay-up while being fouled. She missed the ensuing free throw and Gettysburg grabbed the defensive rebound, but another turnover led to a lay-up by Carole Dempsey as time expired, giving Dickinson a 31-22 lead at the break.

The Red Devils carried the momentum over to the second stanza and opened up a 12-point advantage (36-24) in the early going. After a jumper by Kay Binetti at 15:05 made it 39-28, the Bullets mounted a steady comeback, scoring nine of the next 10 points to pull to within three (40-37) following a pair of free throws by senior Megan Hartman (Lewistown, Pa./Indian Valley) at 10:59. That would be as close as the visitors would get the rest of the way as Laura Lyons scored six of her game-high 21 points over the next four minutes to push the lead back up to seven (48-41) with 6:29 left to play. Gettysburg managed to make it a five-point game with under four minutes to play following five consecutive points by Moser to make it 54-49, but back-to-back old-fashioned three-point plays by Lyons and Carly Onkotz sandwiched around a Hartman free throw put the game back in Dickinson's control for good.

Moser finished the night with 17 points and 12 rebounds, giving the Bullet first-year her third double-double already this season. She was 7-of-12 from the floor and 3-of-3 from the charity stripe. Hartman also reached double-figures with 11 points, doing all of her damage in the second half. Fields finished with eight points and six rebounds, while Margaret White (Burke, Va./James W. Robinson) connected on a pair of three-pointers off the Gettysburg bench.

Lyons finished 8-of-12 from the floor and hit all five of her free throw attempts en route to her point total, while Muller nearly as potent, totaling 18 points on 8-of-14 shooting, including a pair of three-pointers. Muller also contributed three assists and five steals. Dempsey pulled down a team-high 11 rebounds to go with six points and a game-high six steals.

Gettysburg will aim to get back on track with another Centennial Conference match up this weekend against Ursinus College (1-2, 1-0 CC) inside the friendly confines of Bream Gymnasium on Saturday, Dec. 1, at 4 p.m.
