BALTIMORE – The Gettysburg College women's soccer team entered its Centennial Conference semifinal against top-seeded and tournament host Johns Hopkins University having won five of its last six matches. However, the fifth-seeded Bullets were unable to keep their hot streak going, falling by a 2-0 count to the Blue Jays Saturday evening at Homewood Field.
With the loss, Gettysburg concludes the season with an 8-11-1 record. Johns Hopkins (13-4-2) advances to the Centennial Conference championship match to face the winner of the other semifinal between third-seeded Swarthmore and second-seeded Ursinus.
The Blue Jays took an early lead, with Erin Stafford scoring on a scramble in front of the net in the fourth minute. Kim Lane doubled Hopkins' advantage in the 29th minute, connecting on a shot from 20 yards out.
Gettysburg was out-shot 6-1 in the opening period but junior goalie Danielle St. Pierre (Londonberry, N.H./Trinity) made two first-half saves.
The Bullets managed four shots over the final 45 minutes, but that's when Hopkins keeper Karen Kuszkowski made two of her three saves.
St. Pierre finished with three saves for the Bullets. Seniors Kelly Burke (Greenwood Village, Colo./St. Mary's Academy), Colleen Stuart (Centennial, Colo./Arapahoe), Shaina Wright (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg), and Kristen Zielinski (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin East) concluded their careers at Gettysburg with their final collegiate game. They helped the Bullets to a fine 48-29-8 record over the last four years.
