Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Senior guard Nick Shattuck, the reigning Centennial Player of the Year and preseason All-American, led four Bears in double figures with a team-high 20 points as visiting Ursinus College led wire-to-wire in defeating Gettysburg, 84-59, in Centennial Conference action Saturday afternoon at Bream Gymnasium.

With the win, Ursinus (4-1, 2-0 CC) picks up its fourth win in a row while handing the Bullets (4-1, 1-1 CC) their first setback of the season.

Sophomore guard Keith Page, 17 points on 6-for-7 shooting, junior guard John Noonan, 15 points, and sophomore guard Matt Hilton, 12 points, aided Shattuck's effort for the Bears and largely contributed to the team's strong shooting day, 29-for-53 (54.7%), from the field and an even more impressive 11-for-18 (64.1%) from beyond the arc.

Gettysburg was led by junior guards Corey Dorsey (Frederick, Md./St. Johns at Prospect Hall) and Dan Capkin (Wynnewood, Pa./Lower Merion) who poured in 19 and 11 points, respectively.

Ursinus got out to a quick start, going on a 6-0 spurt in the first three minutes of play as senior forward Michael Shema, Shattuck and Noonan all got into the scoring column. After a Bullet timeout, Gettysburg cut the lead to three with a Dorsey three-pointer, but the Bears came storming back as Noonan and Hilton both hit threes, extending the Ursinus lead to nine and prompting another Gettysburg timeout. Ursinus continued to build on its lead throughout the middle portions of the first half as a Noonan lay-up and a Page three-pointer extended the Bears' lead to 31-14 with under four minutes remaining.

The Bullets fought back, though, to keep the game within reach as they finished on 10-2 run to close the half. Freshmen center Andrew Powers (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown) hit his first collegiate three-pointer, and after a turnover by Noonan, Dorsey hit another. Capkin added four more on an old-fashioned three-point-play and another foul shot, cutting the halftime deficit to 33-24.

The Bears would not allow the Bullets to get any closer, however, as they scored the first four points of the second stanza on lay-ups by Shema and Hilton, and Gettysburg would fail to cut the lead to single digits again. With just over 14 minutes remaining, Ursinus went on a 7-0 surge courtesy of a Shattuck lay-up, a three by junior guard Eric Burnett, and a pair of free throws by Noonan, to extend its lead to 56-36.

Gettysburg mounted one final charge as it slowly chipped away at the lead over the next six minutes, cutting the Ursinus margin to 65-53. Dorsey helped the cause with 10 points during this stretch that also featured scoring from Capkin, Powers, junior forward Joe Spierenburg (Chambersburg, Pa./St. Maria Goretti (Md.)), and junior guard Chris Nevolo (Neshanic Station, N.J./Somerville).

Ursinus effectively put the game out of reach by scoring the next 11 points, including seven from Page, in just two minutes to assume a 76-53 advantage. Page's scoring prowess was part of a larger effort by the Ursinus bench that saw them outscore Gettysburg's, 33-10.

Gettysburg will look to bounce back on Wednesday, when it welcomes the reigning Centennial Conference champions, Johns Hopkins University, to Bream Gymnasium for an 8 p.m. start.
