GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Junior guard Corey Dorsey (Frederick, Md./St. Johns at Prospect Hall) scored a team-high 20 points and shot 4-for-6 from three-point range as Gettysburg held off a late Johns Hopkins rally to defeat the defending Centennial Conference champion Blue Jays 82-77 Wednesday evening at Bream Gymnasium.

With the win, Gettysburg Head Coach George Petrie tied Bob Hulton for second on the program's career coaching wins list. Now in his 19th season at Gettysburg, Petrie is currently 246-216 while Hulton went 246-243 from 1957-77. Hen Bream holds the program record with 309 victories.

Junior forward Joe Spierenburg (Chambersburg, Pa./St. Maria Goretti (Md.)) turned  in another solid all-around game, posting seven points, eight rebounds, five assists, and four blocks.

Senior guard Doug Polster led all scorers with 22 points on 6-of-9 three-point shooting while sophomore forward Andrew Farber-Miller added 15 points for Johns Hopkins (4-4, 1-2 CC).

Gettysburg (5-1, 2-1 CC) is now off to its best start through six games since opening the 2001-02 campaign 6-0.

The Bullets led by as much as 15 in the second half, and the Blue Jays still faced a double-digit deficit (80-70) after Capkin hit a pair of free throws with 34 seconds remaining. However, Polster drilled a trey from the top of the arc and was fouled with 24 ticks showing. Polster connected on the free throw to complete the four-point play, and after Dorsey went 1-for-2 at the line, sophomore guard Pat O'Connell splashed home a three, cutting the lead to just 81-77 with 15 seconds to go.

It was too little, too late, however. Capkin followed up by going 1-of-2 at the line, and the Bullets were able to run off the final nine seconds after a missed Johns Hopkins lay-up.

The Blue Jays bolted to a 6-0 lead 1:39 into the game, prompting a Gettysburg timeout. The Bullets responded with an 8-1 run, with Powers scoring six points along the way, as the Orange & Blue went up 8-7.

Hopkins pushed its lead to 18-13 after a put-back from junior guard Phil Beggans, but that's when the Bullets found their outside touch. Gettysburg connected on 6-of-7 three-pointers midway through the half, and a 16-2 tear gave the Bullets their first double-digit lead (37-26) of the night after a Capkin lay-up with 4:29 on the clock. Freshman forward Kevin Kennedy (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard) kicked off the run with a trey that tied the game 24-24, and senior guard Matt Presby (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan) put Gettysburg in front to stay at 7:24 with one of his three long shots on the night. Dorsey followed up with a bomb of his own, making it 32-26 and prompting a Hopkins timeout.

The Blue Jays scored the final five points of the half to make it a 42-36 game at the intermission. The Bullets shot 62.5% from the field in the opening half and were a red-hot 75.0% (6-for-8) from downtown.

Johns Hopkins pulled to within four twice early in the half, but Capkin single-handedly lifted the Bullets on a 7-0 spurt made it 53-42 with 15:35 left. Capkin opened the run with a three-pointer before hitting a pair of foul shots and converting a lay-up.

The Blue Jays narrowed the gap down to 55-50 after a lay-up from junior guard Collin Kamm with 10:56 remaining before Gettysburg unfurled an 11-1 run to up its advantage to 15. Presby highlighted the splurge with two more three-pointers, the second of which made it 66-51 with 7:55 left.

Powers connected on his second trey of the season to make it 73-58 with 4:17 to go before Hopkins' last-minute rally.

Kennedy finished with a season-high nine points, five rebounds, and a pair of blocks in 18 minutes off the bench while Presby went 3-of-4 from beyond the arc while scoring a career-high nine points.

Beggans scored nine points for the Jays while sophomore forward Andrew Baumgartner had eight points and a game-high nine rebounds.

The Bullets made a season-high 11 three-pointers and shot a season-best 61.1% (11-of-18) from the outside.

Gettysburg picks up its Centennial Conference schedule on Saturday, when it visits Haverford College in a 2 p.m. tip-off.
