GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Senior captain
Katie Reilly (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) scored a game-high 22 points to go with eight rebounds and four steals in a 76-41 win against Swarthmore in Centennial Conference (CC) action on Saturday at Bream Gymnasium. The Bullets remain in a fourth-place tie in the CC standings with two games to play.
Gettysburg (14-9, 11-5 CC) shot 50.8 percent (33-for-65) from the floor and saw four players reach double figures in points. Reilly, who was playing in her final regular season home game, made it a memorable day shooting 11-of-17 (.647) from the floor. She now has 969 career points, moving past Steph Dravis into 11th on the Bullets' career scoring list. She needs only 14 to crack the top 10. Reilly also inched closer to the top-10 in rebounds. She has 611, leaving her 11 behind Julie Rausch for 10th.
Reilly was joined by a trio of freshmen in double-digit scoring to help the Bullets to their largest offensive output of the season. Guard
Allie Drechsler (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) had 14 points to go with five rebounds and six assists. Forwards
Nicole Dobranski (Albertson, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) and
Courtney Fields (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls) added 12 and 10 points, respectively. Dobranski's 12 points tied her career high, set at Swarthmore on Jan. 11.
As a team, Gettysburg handed out 26 assists on 33 field goals and forced 29 Swarthmore turnovers, 17 coming by way of the steal.
Swarthmore (4-18, 1-15 CC) junior forward Karen Berk extended her double-figure scoring streak to 25 games, leading the Garnet with 10 points and nine rebounds.
Sophomore forward Melissa Grigsby and junior guard Laura Popovics added six points apiece for Swarthmore.
The Bullets started the afternoon on fire, hitting seven of their first 11 shots (.636), including three 3-pointers, to take an 18-4 lead with 15:00 left in the first half. Drechsler had the hot-hand, sinking two triples and a layup for eight quick points.
Swarthmore responded with a 7-2 run, capped by Berk's layup and free throw at 11:52, to get within 20-10 at the 11:52 mark.
Gettysburg continued to convert shots, holding a 28-17 lead with 6:25 left in the first half. The Bullets asserted control of the game with a 16-0 run to end the half, finished off by a trey from sophomore forward
Emily Harwood (Rockville, Md./Magruder) with 23 seconds left.
The Bullets shot 56.3 percent (18-for-32) and forced 17 Garnet turnovers in the first half to hold a 44-17 lead at the intermission. Dreschler and Fields led Gettysburg with 10 points apiece, while Berk paced Swarthmore with eight points.
Gettysburg continued to pour in points, tallying the first eight markers of the second half to push out to a 52-17 lead. Swarthmore freshman guard Lisa Schumacher scored on a drive at 17:51 to end the run. Two free throws by junior forward Kristen Traband and a three-pointer by Popovics brought the visitors within 54-24 at 14:23.
The Bullets kept the offense rolling, using six points from Reilly on the way to an 8-0 run and their largest lead of the night, 62-24, at the 12:39 mark.
Gettysburg has two games to play, both on the road. The Bullets are tied with Johns Hopkins for fourth place in the CC and will travel to Baltimore, Md., to take on the Blue Jays at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
