CARLISLE, Pa. – Gettysburg shot 3-for-4 from the floor and a perfect 6-for-6 from the foul line in the overtime session to defeat Dickinson, 71-65, and clinch a playoff berth in the Centennial Conference (CC) tournament on Saturday afternoon at the Kline Center. The Bullets, who have won 10 of their last 13 games, will be the fourth seed and will host the first-round match-up against Muhlenberg on Wednesday.
Sophomore
Corey Dorsey (Frederick, Md./St. Johns at Prospect Hall) scored seven of his career-high 19 points in the final two minutes of the overtime session including a three-pointer with 31 seconds remaining that reclaimed the lead for the Bullets (12-12, 10-8 CC), 67-65, for the final time. After a defensive stop by Gettysburg, sophomore guard
Chris Nevolo (Neshanic Station, N.J./Somerville) nailed a pair of free throws on his first attempts of the day with 13 seconds remaining that gave Gettysburg a four-point lead. Dickinson turned the ball over on its ensuing possession and lost any hopes of a comeback.
Sophomore guard
Dan Capkin (Wynnewood, Pa./Lower Merion), the third-leading scorer in the conference, led Gettysburg with a game-high 22 points on 8-of-15 shooting, including a perfect 6-of-6 from the charity stripe. Capkin's effort from the line was part of a larger team success as Gettysburg was an astounding 21-for-22 (.955) from the line on the afternoon.
Sophomore
Joe Spierenburg (Chambersburg, Pa./St. Maria Goretti [Md.]), the nation's sixth-leading shot blocker, scored 13 points on 6-of-9 shooting and swatted six shots including an attempted game-winning three-pointer by Dickinson freshman forward Cory Kenny with five seconds remaining in regulation. Senior captain
Julius Redd (Gaithersburg, Md./Magruder) had a game-high 13 rebounds and Dorsey tied his career mark with eight.
The game started out extremely tight over the first 10 minutes as neither side could gain more than a three-point lead. At the ten-minute mark, Gettysburg was on top 19-18, led by Capkin's 10 points in the early going. The Bullets were finally able to obtain a two-possession lead when Redd hit two free throws with 7:12 left to give Gettysburg a 25-20 lead. The game continued to be relatively close, and Dickinson sophomore forward Tim Crouch cut Gettysburg's lead down to two points, 29-27, with a jumper with 2:40 remaining in the first half.
The Bullets went on an 8-2 spurt to close the half with an eight-point lead, 37-29. Gettysburg shot 13-of-23 (.565) from the floor in the first half, and held the Red Devils to 9-for-33 (.273) shooting.
Dickinson came out strong in the second half and closed within two, 39-37, on a three-pointer by senior forward Jon Skvarka fewer than four minutes into the half. Gettysburg held the lead over the next nine minutes, but the margin remained nearly the same as the Bullets' biggest lead was six points. Kenny's jumper with just over seven minutes remaining cut the Bullets' lead to 52-49.
Capkin answered right back with a jumper, and after a Spierenburg block, Nevolo assisted on a Dorsey dunk to give Gettysburg a seven-point lead, its largest in over 12 minutes. Gettysburg still had a seven-point advantage, 58-51, with under 3:30 to go in regulation. Dickinson began its comeback with a Kenny three-pointer; after a Dickinson foul shot, Kenny nailed another trey to even the game with 2:15 left to go.
After each team missed a shot from the field, Gettysburg had the ball with under one minute to go, but Dickinson was able to force a turnover with 39 seconds remaining. The home team called a timeout to set-up a play, but Kenny's shot was blocked with five seconds to go. The Red Devils regained possession and called another timeout with three ticks remaining. Sophomore guard Kizmahr Grell's attempted game-winning jumper was blocked by Nevolo, and the teams headed for the extra stanza.
A layup by Spierenburg in the opening minute gave Gettysburg the early lead, but sophomore guard Mike Geosits hit a layup for Dickinson, and the teams were tied at 60-60 with under three minutes to go. Senior captain
Brian Sateja (Morristown, N.J./Delbarton School) stepped to the foul line for the first time on the day and knocked down a pair to put the Bullets up by two. Geosits answered right back with a three to give Dickinson its first lead in over 33 minutes.
Dorsey answered with a layup to put Gettysburg on top, 64-63, but sophomore forward Tom Leszczynski returned the favor for Dickinson. That set up Dorsey to hit the three that gave Gettysburg the lead for the final time with 31 seconds to go.
Dickinson was led by Leszczynski who had team highs in both points and rebounds with 12 and eight, respectively. Leszczynski was one of three Red Devils in double-figures. He was joined by Grell (11) and Kenny (10).
Gettysburg will host fifth-seeded Muhlenberg on Wednesday night at a time yet to be determined. The two teams split the pair of meetings during the year as each club won in the others' gym. Both games needed overtime to decide the outcome.
