Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Gettysburg got at least six points from seven different players, including a game-high 19 from sophomore guard Dan Capkin (Wynnewood, Pa./Lower Merion) to cruise to an 88-51 win against Washington (Md.) in Centennial Conference (CC) action on Saturday at Bream Gymnasium. The 88 points are the most scored by the Bullets since an 88-54 win against Dickinson on Feb. 22, 2005, and the 37-point margin of victory was the largest by a Gettysburg team since an 85-45 win against Haverford on Feb. 2, 2002.

All 17 players in uniform played for the Bullets (9-11, 7-7 CC), who have won seven of their last nine games since opening the season 2-9 and 0-5 in conference play. Gettysburg has now evened its conference record and is tied for fourth place with Swarthmore.

Capkin, the CC's fifth-leading scorer entering the day, has now scored in double digits 16 times in 20 games. He made 50 percent of his shots (8-of-16) on Saturday, with three of those coming from beyond the arc. In all, Gettysburg made 9-of-20 (.450) attempts from 3-point land. Senior center Brian Sateja (Morristown, N.J./Delbarton School) added 14 points on 7-of-11 (.636) shooting. Sophomore forward Joe Spierenburg (Chambersburg, Pa./St. Maria Goretti [Md.]) scored 12 points and missed his first career double-double by one rebound. The nine rebounds mark a career high. He has scored at least 10 points in six straight games.

Against the Shoremen (3-16, 2-11 CC), the Bullets made 16 of their first 27 field goal attempts (.592) to build a 39-10 lead with 5:17 to go before halftime. The home team used sharp passing to get the ball inside all day, building a 56-26 advantage in points in the paint and scored a 24-13 edge on points off of turnovers.

Washington was led by senior forward Joey Breslin's 13 points. Sophomore guard Tim Kohlrus added 11. The team shot just 24 percent (6-of-25) from the floor in the first half, and Breslin had the team lead with three points at the break.

More than two minutes had been played when Capkin opened the scoring with a 3-pointer at the 17:48 mark, and it was almost another minute before senior forward Julius Redd (Gaithersburg, Md./Magruder) made it 5-0 with a jumper. The teams traded small runs over the next 3:18. Washington then pulled to within two at 11-9 with 13:36 to play before halftime on a 3-pointer by Kohlrus.

From that point, Gettysburg erupted for a 28-1 run over 8:19 that made the score 39-10. During that stretch, the Bullets made 11-of-17 (.647) field goals. Capkin scored 10 of the first 16 points before Breslin hit a free throw for Washington's only point in the stretch. The Bullets then added four 3-pointers. Sophomore guard Corey Dorsey (Frederick, Md./St. Johns at Prospect Hall) hit the first and last, with freshman Neil Huber (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg) and sophomore Renato Tambellini (Millville, N.J./Sacred Heart) each connecting. Tambellini had a season-high eight points on the day, while Huber had career highs with nine minutes and five points.

A Tambellini triple at the 1:01 mark of the first half gave the Bullets a 46-17 lead, which they would take to the locker room.

Coming out after the break, the Bullets committed six fouls over the first 3:09, during which time the Shoremen shaved eight points off their deficit. Washington made 6-of-8 free throws in that stretch including two foul shots and a three-point play by sophomore guard Todd Green. To that point in the game, Gettysburg had attempted just one freebie, which it missed, and would ultimately score its first 66 points from the floor.

Just as quickly as the Shoremen had assembled their 12-4 run, the Bullets answered. Sateja got an offensive rebound and a put-back at the 16:34 mark to kick off a 12-2 run over 2:00 minutes to end any hope of a comeback by Washington.

The Bullets continued to maintain the lead, and when head coach George Petrie emptied his bench, sophomore Doug Kaufman (McLean, Va./Sidwell Friends [D.C.]) collected the first points of his career, and junior guard Darren Dwyer (Olean, N.Y./Archbishop Walsh) tallied a career-high six points.

Gettysburg will return to action on Wednesday when the Bullets travel to Collegeville, Pa., to take on second-place Ursinus. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
