Box Score
GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Freshman forward
Courtney Fields (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls) came up two rebounds shy of a triple-double in helping Gettysburg to a 70-57 victory against Washington (Md.) in Centennial Conference (CC) action on Saturday afternoon at Bream Gymnasium. Fields collected 16 points, a career-high 10 steals and eight rebounds to pace a 15-steal performance by the home squad. Her 10 steals are the most by a Gettysburg player since the start of CC play in 1993-94.
The Bullets (13-8, 10-4 CC) also got a big effort from freshman guard
Allie Drechsler (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill), who led all players with 18 points on 9-of-16 (.563) shooting from the field. She also had two rebounds, three steals, an assist and a blocked shot without turning the ball over. Drechsler and Fields were joined in double-digit scoring by junior guard
Megan Hartman (Lewistown, Pa./Indian Valley), who had 12 points and senior captain
Katie Reilly (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) with 11.
Hartman has averaged 12.0 points over the last three games, breaking double digits in all three, while Reilly has cracked 10 points in five straight games. She had double-doubles in the first three games in that stretch to go with nine-rebound performances in each of the last two games. Reilly now has 935 career points, moving past Jay Hodge '03 on Saturday into 12th place on the Bullets' career scoring list.
The Shorewomen (10-11, 4-10 CC) got 14 points on 5-of-7 (.714) shooting by sophomore guard Brianne Slizofski, who tied junior guard Elise Conway for the team high with eight rebounds. Senior guard LaToya Turner added 13 points and seven rebounds.
Washington opened the scoring with baskets by Turner and junior forward Brenda Lucas. The Bullets tied it up at 4-4, and the Shorewomen would go ahead by one point twice before Drechsler made a layup at the 15:20 mark of the first half to give Gettysburg the lead for good. Hartman converted a three-point play on the Bullets' next possession, and despite the Shorewomen cutting the deficit to two points twice, Gettysburg began to pull away late in the opening frame.
After a Slizofski jumper at the 3:53 mark made the score 28-23 in favor of Gettysburg, the Bullets' closed the half on a 9-0 run. Gettysburg got contributions from all over the floor, including a steal by Fields, who fed Drechsler for a fast-break layup as the half expired to make the score 37-23. The Bullets shot 45.7 percent (16-for-35) from the floor in the first half and were nearly as good, 41.9 percent (13-for-31), after the break.
The Shorewomen held the scoring edge, 34-33, in the second half. They were able to get as close as nine points at 44-35 on a Turner jumper at the 15:35 mark, and Gettysburg would go up by as many as 17. Reilly hit a jumper with 9:29 to play, making the score 55-38, and Washington never got closer than 11 again.
The Bullets are now tied with Johns Hopkins for fourth place in the CC standings, sitting one game behind second place and one game ahead of sixth place. With their three-game home stand now complete, they will hit the road to face sixth-place Ursinus on Tuesday night. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at Helfferich Gymnasium.
