GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Ursinus went 4-for-4 from the line in the last minute of each half and overcame a late one-point deficit to defeat Gettysburg, 53-50, in Centennial Conference (CC) action on Tuesday night at Helfferich Gym. The loss, combined with Johns Hopkins' loss to No. 25 McDaniel puts the Bullets in a three-way tie for fourth place in the conference with just three games remaining in the regular season. The top five teams make the playoffs.
For Gettysburg (13-9, 10-5 CC), freshman forward
Courtney Fields (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls) posted her second-straight double-double, tying for the team high with 12 points and leading the way on the glass with a game-high 11 rebounds. Senior captain
Katie Reilly (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) and freshman guard
Allie Drechsler (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) also added 12 points apiece. Reilly grabbed eight rebounds, including the 600th of her career. She now needs just 20 boards to move into Gettysburg's all-time top-10.
Ursinus (14-8, 10-5 CC) pulled out a win on a night when a loss would have severely damaged its playoff hopes. The Bears were a game behind the Bullets in the standings, and a loss would have put them two back with three to play, and Gettysburg would have owned the tie-breaker courtesy of the head-to-head sweep. Freshman center Carolyn Konstanzer did her part to keep Ursinus in the postseason chase with a game-high 17 points on 8-of-13 (.615) shooting. Senior forward Mary Kate Daley added an 11-point, 10-rebound double-double, and junior guard Sarah Hennessey contributed with 14 points and seven boards.
Less than five minutes into the game, Hennessey hit a jumper that put the home team up 7-2. The five points represented the largest lead either team would have all night. Gettysburg got the lead on a Drechsler layup with 10:39 to play before halftime. Freshman forward
Ali Goldsmith (Farmingdale, N.J./Howell) connected on a 3-pointer off an offensive rebound a little more than a minute later for Gettysburg's largest lead of the game at 15-11. The lead changed hands twice more, and the Bullets held a three-point edge with 45 seconds before the break. Hennessey would hit a pair of free throws, and senior center Molly Guntli added two more to push the Bears ahead by one, 22-21.
In a game that featured 10 ties and 15 lead changes, the Bullets went up by one, 46-45, with 4:17 remaining in regulation on a Reilly layup. Freshman forward
Nicole Dobranski (Albertston, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) made a jumper to push the lead to three.
Hennessey then drained a 3-pointer with 2:54 remaining for the ninth tie of the game. Reilly put the Bullets ahead again at the 2:39 mark, but they would not score again. Hennessey made the first of two free throws with 1:20 showing on the clock. Just 22 seconds later, she would convert both freebies to put her team on top for good, and Daley sealed the deal with a pair of from the stripe with nine seconds to go.
Gettysburg will return home for the final time in the regular season on Saturday with its playoff fate still in its own hands. The Bullets will play host to Swarthmore in the second game of a CC double header at Bream Gymnasium. Tip-off is slated for 4 p.m.
