Box Score
GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Sophomore guard
Dan Capkin (Wynnewood, Pa./Lower Merion) matched his career high with 27 points, but Ursinus had three players with at least 20 in an 85-73 victory over Gettysburg in Centennial Conference (CC) action on Wednesday night at Helfferich Gymnasium. With a flurry of upsets in the conference, the Bullets' tie for fourth place has now grown to three teams, and two more are tied for seventh, one game back with three to play. The top five teams make the CC tournament.
The Bullets (9-12, 7-8 CC) were led by Capkin, who also had 27 against McDaniel on Jan. 20. Beginning with that game, he has scored at least 19 points in five of the last six contests and averaged 21.2 points. Sophomore guard
Corey Dorsey (Frederick, Md./St. Johns at Prospect Hall) came off the bench and added 11 points and eight rebounds, while classmate
Joe Spierenburg (Chambersburg, Pa./St. Maria Goretti [Md.]) also scored 11.
Ursinus (16-6, 13-2) gained a share of first place in the CC standings courtesy of the win and McDaniel's road upset of No. 17 Johns Hopkins. Junior guard Nick Shattuck, the conference's leading scorer, tied with senior forward Matt Fabian for the team high with 21 points. Senior forward Will Furey, who was named CC Player of the Week on Monday, added a 20-point, 10-rebound double-double.
Capkin used 12 points in the first half to help Gettysburg to a 38-36 lead at the break. Furey hit a layup with 10:22 to go before the half, tying the game for the sixth time and starting a 9-0 Ursinus run. Fabian's layup at the 6:53 mark made it 28-21, which would be the Bears' largest lead of the half.
Furey made another bucket with 2:10 to go before the intermission, putting the home team ahead by five points at 36-31, but the Bullets ended the half on a 7-0 run to regain the lead. Spierenburg made two free throws, Capkin sank a 3-pointer, and Dorsey went 2-for-2 from the line.
Ursinus got out of the gates quickly in the second half. Freshman guard Remy Cousart tied the game for the eighth time just 27 seconds in. Gettysburg senior center
Brian Sateja (Morristown, N.J./Delbarton School) made the second of two free throws at the other end, but a three-point play by Fabian on the Bear's next trip gave the home team the lead for good. They pushed the lead to seven points at 49-42 on a dunk by Shattuck before Gettysburg rallied to tie it again at 51-51 on back-to-back jumpers by Dorsey with 13:57 remaining in regulation.
The Bears jumped out to a six-point lead again, but the Bullets reeled them in to tie the game for the final time at 59-59 with 8:16 to play. Ursinus scored eight of the next 10 points, and despite a Capkin trey that cut the lead to three, the home team pulled away down the stretch for the victory.
Gettysburg will return to Bream Gymnasium to start the last home stand of the season on Saturday. The first of the two at home will be a 2 p.m. game against Swarthmore, one of the other two 7-8 teams in the conference.
