Box Score
GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Freshman attacker
Hollis Stahl (Highstown, N.J./Peddie School) opened her career with a hat trick and a team-high four points to lead No. 2 Gettysburg to a 12-8 win over No. 12 Mary Washington in non-conference action on Thursday afternoon at Clark Field. The Bullets overcame deficits of 3-0 and 4-1 to win their 12th consecutive home game.
Gettysburg (1-0) freshman netminder
Kristen Krammer (Woodbine, Md./Glenelg) got the nod in goal and made seven saves for her first career victory. Senior captain
Katie Hagan (Media, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) and juniors
Krissy Browning (Baldwin, Md./Fallston) and
Katie Ceglarski (Darien, Conn./Darien) all picked up where they left off a year ago with two scores apiece. Browning and Ceglarski each added an assist for three points, which was matched by classmate
Megan Moore (Chestertown, Md./Gunston Day School), who had a goal and two helpers.
Eagles' (2-1) senior midfielder Meaghan O'Leary led all players with two goals and three assists for five points. Junior attacker Caitlyn Erickson added a hat trick and an assist, and classmate Meredith Deitrick was strong in net making 17 saves on 44 Gettysburg shots.
Mary Washington jumped on the board quickly, scoring twice in the game's first 3:01. Junior attacker Emily Talbot took a feed from senior attacker Kaitlyn Barker and made it 1-0 at the 27:33 mark. Just 35 seconds later, O'Leary would tack on another goal. Talbot scored again to put the Eagles' lead at 3-0, which was cut to 3-1 on an unassisted strike by Ceglarski. A free-position goal by Barker with 16:27 to go before halftime made it 4-1, but the Bullets were about to break loose.
Junior attacker
Jamie Giffuni (St. James, N.Y./Smithtown) scored with an assist going to senior attacker
Jen Betts (Potomac, Md./Academy of the Holy Cross) near the midpoint of the opening half. That would be the first of seven consecutive goals for Gettysburg over a span of 18:32.
Ceglarski gave the Bullets their first lead of the season, making it 5-4 with 5:18 to go in the half. She had a chance to extend the lead on a free-position attempt with six seconds left. Deitrick made the stop, but the ball got just far enough away that Stahl was able to flip it in off the ground for her first career goal with just three ticks left on the clock.
After the break, the Bullets wasted little time keeping the momentum going. Hagan scored just 44 seconds into the frame. After a free-position attempt sailed high two-and-a-half minutes later, the Bullets retained possession. Browning took the ball behind the net, and on the start-of-play whistle, she found Stahl right in front where she put the ball in the upper left corner for her second score.
Mary Washington would score twice in a 1:24 span to cut its deficit to 8-6 with nearly 20 minutes to play, but the Bullets scored the next three goals to push the lead back to five.
The Bullets will continue a tough early-season slate next Thursday when they take on their second of three straight preseason top-15 teams. They travel to Glassboro, N.J., to take on No. 15 Rowan in a 4 p.m. contest.
