NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. – Senior first baseman Joe Bonyai (Torrington, Conn./Hotchkiss School) went 4-for-8 with two home runs and five RBI to help Gettysburg sweep a doubleheader against Mount Aloysius in non-conference action on Sunday afternoon. The Bullets pounded out eight extra-base hits on the day to down the Mounties 8-5 and 14-2. At 6-0, Gettysburg has matched its longest winning streak since 1998.
The offensive outburst continued on Sunday for the Bullets, who have averaged 8.67 runs in the first six contests of the year. Junior center fielder Sean McGee (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck) was 3-for-6 and scored four times. Senior left fielder Mark Campo (Arendtsville, Pa./Biglerville) was 5-for-8 with three runs scored and two RBI. Sophomore shortstop Scott Vladyka (Stanhope, N.J./Lenape Valley Regional) went 3-for-4 in the opener, and senior right fielder Chase Straub (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) was 3-for-4 with a home run, a double, three RBI and a pair of runs scored in the nightcap.
For Mount Aloysius (1-5), sophomore center fielder Dan Clark was 4-for-6 with a home run, two RBI and two runs scored. Senior third baseman Chuck Farris added a 3-for-7 effort with a double and two RBI.
Gettysburg was the visiting team for game one and wasted no time getting on the board. McGee led off with a single and went to third on a double by senior third baseman Ben Carey (Colchester, Conn./St. Bernard). Two batters later, senior designated hitter Brian Pernice (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown) drew the first of his four walks in the game to load the bases. Junior catcher Michael Donohue (Livingston, N.J./Livingston) followed with a walk to force McGee home. Donohue would walk three times in the opener. Campo then drove in two more runs with a two-out single, giving the Bullets a 3-0 advantage.
The Mounties got one back in the bottom of the inning when senior shortstop Matthew Duval was hit by a pitch to lead off and eventually scored on an RBI single by Farris. The Bullets got that run back in the top of the third on a leadoff home run by Bonyai, the team's first round tripper of the year.
Mount Aloysius jumped in front with a four-run third. The first two hitters were retired, but the Mounties strung together five hits and scored four times with the help of two Bullet errors. The big blow was a two-run homerun by Clark. Gettysburg tied the game with four walks in the top of the sixth inning. Donohue drove in McGee on a bases-loaded free pass for the second time in the game, and the Bullets took the lead in their next turn at bat. Campo led off with a single and went to second on an error. Two batters later, Vladyka drove him in with a single, and McGee followed with a single. Both players would score on a series of passed balls to add a pair of insurance runs.
Mount Aloysius got back-to-back two-out singles in its half of the seventh, but sophomore Chris Liegel (Oak Ridge, N.J./Pope John XXIII) came on in relief and got two quick outs to earn the save. Junior Kenny Stone (Orlando, Fla./Bishop Moore Catholic) pitched 2 2/3 innings of relief to pick up his second win of the season.
In the second game, the Mounties were the visitors, and they made some noise in the top of the first inning. They had runners on first and third with nobody out and the bases loaded with two outs, but freshman pitcher John Antrim-Cashin (Dobbs Ferry, N.Y./Fordham Prep) coaxed a ground ball to get out of the inning. He would throw five innings, allowing just one run on three hits to earn his first collegiate win.
After Antrim-Cashin retired the side in order in the top of the second, the Gettysburg offense went to work. Sophomore catcher Pat Hanley (Buffalo, N.Y./Nichols School) went deep to lead off the inning. Campo followed with a single, and Straub belted a two-run home run. One out later, sophomore second baseman Sam Stabert (Wynnewood, Pa./Lower Merion) singles, and McGee reached on an error. A walk to Carey loaded the bases for Bonyai, who hit a grand slam. Straub drove in his third run of the inning with a single. In all, the Bullets sent 13 men to the plate and scored eight times on seven hits, three of which were home runs.
Gettysburg added a run in the third, three in the fourth on a two-run double by freshman shortstop Mike Backus (Piscataway, N.J./Immaculata) and a sacrifice fly by Carey, and two runs in the sixth.
The Bullets will be back in action on Monday when they face Ripon for a doubleheader in Temple Terrace, Fla. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
