Gettysburg vs. Russell Sage Box Score

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Freshman pitcher Beth McCullough (Ft. Wayne, Ind./Homestead) struck out eight batters while allowing just one hit and one walk, and the Gettysburg offense put up nine runs to give the Bullets a 9-1 win against Russell Sage in five innings and salvage a split on the first day of the 2007 season. Gettysburg fell, 4-0, to Arcadia in the opener.

McCullough blanked the Gators (0-2) for the first three innings, allowing the Bullets (1-1) to build a 7-0 lead before Russell Sage could break up the shutout. A one-out single by senior right fielder Meg Gorsuch (Mount Airy, Md./South Carroll) kicked off a six-run rally in the top of the third inning. Juniors Heather Sagaities (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg) and Ali Stoll (Swampscott, Mass./Swampscott) drew back-to-back walks to load the bases. Sophomore second baseman Jessica Wallick (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg) reached on a fielder's choice, but the Gators' attempt to get Gorsuch at the plate was too late. Two batters later, sophomore shortstop Nicole Yannotta (Whippany, N.J./Whippany Park) drove in a pair with a single. Freshman Ali Iacobucci (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville) smacked a two-run double, and classmate Kara Kempski (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) also had an RBI single in the inning, giving McCullough all the support she needed. Gettysburg added a single run in the fourth and two in the fifth to end the game.

In the opener, Arcadia (3-2) senior Jenn Compton held the Bullets to two hits over seven innings of work to pick up the complete-game shutout. In the top of the first inning, Compton singled and went to second on a passed ball. She scored on classmate Laura Fencik's single. The Knights added runs in the third, sixth and seventh innings.

Sagaities and Yannotta each collected a base hit for the Bullets in the game. The team attempted a comeback in the seventh inning when Arcadia errors put runners on second and third with two out, but Compton snuffed out the potential rally.

Gettysburg will be back in action on Tuesday when the Bullets take on Sweet Briar at 9 a.m., followed by a game against Villa Julie.
