Gettysburg vs. Villa Julie Box Score
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Gettysburg softball team pounded out 18 runs and 23 hits to earn a pair of non-conference wins on Tuesday, defeating Sweet Briar, 9-3, and Villa Julie, 9-2. Freshman pitcher Beth McCullough (Fort Wayne, Ind./Homestead) picked up her second straight win in the opener, and sophomore Kristy Rubino (Parsippany, N.J./Parsippany) evened her record at 1-1 with a complete-game, three-hit effort in the nightcap.
The Bullets (3-1) have won three straight since opening with a loss on Monday, and they got out of the gates quickly against Sweet Briar (6-5). Junior Heather Sagaities (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg) reached on an error to lead off the game and moved to third on a sacrifice by sophomore Erin Ober (Lutherville, Md./Dulaney) and a groundout by sophomore Jessica Wallick (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg). Junior catcher Abbe Miller (Spring City, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) followed with her first home run of the season, plating Sagaities, who would score three times in the game.
Gettysburg pushed the lead to five runs with a two-out rally in the third inning. Miller and sophomore Nicole Yannotta (Whippany, N.J./Whippany Park) hit back-to-back singles, and freshman Ali Iacobucci (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville) drove them both in on a triple. She would then score on a single by classmate Kara Kempski (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon).
Sweet Briar got on the board with a single run in the bottom of the third, but Ober answered with a two-run home run in the top of the fourth. Each team plated two runs in the sixth, but McCullough made the lead stand up.
In game two, Gettysburg was the home team. Rubino retired Villa Julie (1-2) in the top of the first, and her teammates exploded for five runs in the bottom of the inning. Sagaities was hit by a pitch to lead off. Ober sacrificed her to second, and a base hit by Wallick and a walk to Iacobucci loaded the bases for Yannotta. Yannotta cleared the bases with a triple. She scored on an RBI single by freshman catcher Sarah Woodbury (Audubon, Pa./Mt. St. Joseph Academy). Woodbury went to second on an error and rode home on a single by Kempski. Woodbury was 3-for-4 in the game and scored three times.
That would be all the offense Rubino would need, but Gettysburg added single runs in the second and third innings and two in the sixth.
The Bullets will continue their spring break with a pair of games on Wednesday against Rio Grande and Penn State Altoona. The Rio Grande game will begin at 9 a.m.
