MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Gettysburg softball team earned a split on the final day of its spring break trip, downing Utica, 5-3, before falling to Alvernia, 1-0. Freshman pitcher Beth McCullough (Ft. Wayne, Ind./Homestead) improved to 4-0 with the complete-game win in the opener.

Sophomore second baseman Jessica Wallick (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg) and junior catcher Abbe Miller (Spring City, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) drove in two runs apiece to help the Bullets (5-3) to the victory against Utica (5-2).

Gettysburg, which was the visiting team in both games, got the early lead with a one-out rally in game one. Freshman Ali Iacobucci (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville) drew a walk, and Wallick singled. Junior Heather Sagaities (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg) reached on an error that scored Iacobucci. After a walk to sophomore shortstop Nicole Yannotta (Whippany, N.J./Whippany Park), Miller plated a pair with a single.

Utica got one back in the bottom of the inning, but the pitchers matched zeroes for the next five frames. In the top of the seventh, Wallick singled with the bases loaded to drive in two insurance runs. The Pioneers answered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the inning, but that was all the closer they would get.

In the nightcap, sophomore Kristy Rubino (Parsippany, N.J./Parsippany) and Alvernia sophomore Emily Williams matched each other throughout the game. Williams allowed just four hits in a complete-game shutout, while Rubino allowed just two base hits. She took the loss, however, after giving up an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh.

Senior Allyson McCready was hit by a pitch with one out in the inning and was lifted for a pinch runner, who went from first to third on a ground out to the third baseman. The winning run then scored when the next batter reached on an error.

Gettysburg will return to action on Tuesday, when the Bullets travel to Selinsgrove, Pa., to play a non-conference doubleheader at Susquehanna. The first pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
