Box Score

HAVERFORD, Pa. – Haverford senior goalie K.C. Peterson made 21 saves to help his team overcome an early deficit and upset No. 2 Gettysburg, 6-5, in both teams' Centennial Conference (CC) opener on Sunday afternoon at The Haverford School. The Fords defeated the Bullets for the first time after 23 losses in the all-time series, and Gettysburg lost its first CC game since Apr. 10, 2004, snapping a 21-game winning streak in conference play.

The Bullets (3-1, 0-1 CC) were dominant in the possession statistics, winning 10-of-14 faceoffs and outshooting the Fords (3-2, 1-0 CC) 37-17, but Peterson turned away 21 shots in his first start of the season following an injury. Included in that number was a nine-save third quarter that saw Haverford outscore Gettysburg 2-0 and take the lead for the first time in the game.

Junior midfielder Dean Granoff led all players with three goals. Senior attackman Max Tcheyan and junior attackman Mike Distler added a goal and an assist each for the home team. For the Bullets, five different players tallied goals, and senior midfielder Kevin Freehill (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) added an assist for a team-high two points. Senior midfielder Jimmy Gates (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) won 10-of-14 faceoffs and scooped three groundballs.

Gettysburg got off to a quick start, scoring twice in a one-minute span early in the first quarter. Sophomore attackman Rob Triplett (McLean, Va./McLean) scored unassisted at the 10:00 mark, and classmate Drew Duckworth (Rye, N.Y./Hotchkiss School [Conn.]) gave the Bullets their biggest lead of the day with 9:00 showing on the clock. Granoff got the Fords started 4:47 later, but Gettysburg junior attackman Trip Dyer (Ocean View, Del./Worcester Prep [Md.]) extended the lead back to two goals with 13 seconds remaining in the first quarter.

Distler and Tcheyan netted the game's next two tallies to even the score at 3-3. Freehill responded with a goal with 3:32 to play before halftime, giving Gettysburg what would be its last lead.

After the break, Peterson stopped all nine third-quarter shots on goal by Gettysburg, while freshman attackman Brian Fleishhacker and Granoff scored 1:38 apart to put the Fords in front. Granoff would finish off his hat trick with the game winner at the 13:57 mark of the fourth quarter. Playing in his first game of the season, sophomore attackman Zach Pucci (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) scored a little more than a minute later, but the Bullets were never able to muster the equalizer.

Gettysburg senior goalie Pat Vaughan (Cockeysville, Md./Loyola Blakefield) made six saves in the loss.

The Bullets will be back in action on Wednesday when they play host to Cabrini in a non-conference game at Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m.
