Ben Carey matched his career high with four hits against Villa Julie
Box Score

GLEN BURNIE, Md. – Senior third baseman Ben Carey (Colchester, Conn./St. Bernard) went 4-for-5, and junior catcher Michael Donohue (Livingston, N.J./Livingston) drove in four runs to help Gettysburg to a 9-5 win over Villa Julie in non-conference action at the Bachman Sports Complex on Friday afternoon. The Bullets have won three straight.

Carey tied his career high with four hits, a mark set against Villa Julie (5-5) in the 2006 season finale. He also scored twice. Donohue was 2-for-4 with a career-high four RBI and scored a run.

With the weather playing havoc with their post-spring break schedule, the Bullets (11-2) set out to get their pitchers some work after a week off. Junior righty Mike Ciancio (Roseland, N.J./Newark Academy) went the first three innings, allowing two runs, one earned, on five hits. He struck out two and walked none to improve to 2-1 on the season. Freshman Packer Larson (Newark, Del./St. Mark's) went the middle three innings, and sophomore Will Kleva (Ocean City, N.J./Ocean City) closed things out with three innings of two-hit ball. He earned his first career save and lowered his earned run average to 0.59.

The Mustangs got two hits each from junior center fielder Jim Smith and junior third baseman Buddy Breidenbaugh. Smith was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, while Breidenbaugh was also 2-for-4 and drove in a pair.

Gettysburg's offensive effort was aided by six Villa Julie errors, but the Bullets got four runs the hard way in the top of the first inning, putting together four hits as part of a 13-hit attack. Junior center fielder Sean McGee (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck) was hit by a pitch to lead off the game. He went to third on a double by Carey, and senior first baseman Joe Bonyai (Torrington, Conn./Hotchkiss School) singled him home. Donohue reached on a fielder's choice that retired Bonyai at second, but picked up his first RBI of the game when Carey scored. Senior designated hitter Brian Pernice (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown) scored Donohue with a double. Two batters later, senior right fielder Chase Straub (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) singled to drive in Pernice.

The Bullets would never give up the lead, adding two runs in the second, one in the fourth and two in the ninth. Donohue drove in Carey and sophomore shortstop Sam Stabert (Wynnewood, Pa./Lower Merion) with a single in the second. McGee came home on another Donohue single in the fourth. Gettysburg closed out its scoring with a two-run single by Stabert in the top of the ninth.

The Mustangs tried to get back into the game with single runs in the first and second innings. They struck for three runs in the bottom of the fourth when sophomore first baseman Wade Keenan was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, and Breidenbaugh ripped a two-run double.

The Bullets will return to action on Tuesday when they play host to Dickinson in the team's Centennial Conference and home opener. First pitch is schedule for 3:30 p.m.
