GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Junior midfielder Amanda Smith scored seven points on four goals and three assists to lift No. 4 Middlebury to a 12-11 overtime upset of top-ranked Gettysburg in non-conference action on Thursday afternoon at Clark Field. The loss is the first for the Bullets since the 2006 NCAA Division III Championship game and just their third in the last 37 games.

Gettysburg (6-1) junior attacker Krissy Browning (Baldwin, Md./Fallston) and senior attacker Alexandra Ewing (Baltimore, Md./Garrison Forest) each tallied a hat trick, and junior midfielder Megan Moore (Chestertown, Md./Gunston Day School) tacked on two goals and two assists for four points. Junior midfielder Katie Ceglarski (Darien, Conn./Darien) tallied a goal and an assist and tied senior captain Laurie Goon (Baltimore, Md./Lock Raven) for the game high with seven ground balls.

The Panthers (2-1) got a big offensive performance from senior midfielder Kim Walker, who scored three times. Freshman midfielder Dana Heritage and junior attacker Katherine Entwisle scored twice each, and senior attacker Liza Humes passed out three assists.

Middlebury dominated the game on the draw control, winning 18-of-26 for the afternoon. The led to Heritage and Entwisle each scoring within the first 3:29 to give the visitors a 2-0 advantage. Gettysburg roared back with the next four goals, scoring the first three in a span of 2:07. Browning scored the first, which was the first of her season-high three goals, and Ewing followed with the next three.

Walker and Smith scored the next two to draw Middlebury even at 4-4. The teams then traded goals twice, with Gettysburg breaking each deadlock. Heritage tied it up at 6-6 with 3:19 to go before halftime, but the Bullets answered, scoring twice before the break.

Ceglarski emerged from a scrum about 10 yards in front of the goal with the ball for an uncontested point-blank shot that beat Middlebury sophomore goalie Blair Bowie. Bowie made nine stops in the game. Moore ran the Gettysburg lead to 8-6 with 28 seconds showing on the clock, and that is how the first half would end.

After the break, Browning scored again just 38 seconds in to complete a 3-0 Bullet run. Middlebury took control for an 8:08 span over which it scored four goals to take its first lead since 2-0. Smith's third goal made it 10-9 with 20:40 to go in regulation.

The Bullets ended the run when senior captain Katie Hagan (Media, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) netted a free-position goal at the 17:42 mark to tie it up again at 10-10. Less than four minutes later, junior attacker Jamie Giffuni (St. James, N.Y./Smithtown) made a nice pass from behind the cage to senior attacker Jen Betts (Potomac, Md./Academy of the Holy Cross) near the right post. Betts pulled the trigger on the go-ahead goal with 14:13 to play, but that would be the end of the scoring for the home team.

With 4:19 showing on the clock, Entwisle scored on Smith's last assist to even it up. From there, the Panthers called a timeout and won the ensuing draw control. They successfully passed the ball around the perimeter for the next four minutes before attacking.

It appeared that the game was destined for overtime, which it ultimately was, but the last five seconds of the second half were not without drama. A Bullet yellow card led to a Middlebury free-position shot with four seconds left on the clock. The shot was wide, but Heritage gathered the ground ball and got off another shot as time expired. That too was wide, forcing the extra session.

With 1:43 gone in the first half of the overtime period, Smith struck again, this time for the game winner. The victory gives Middlebury a 3-0 lead in the all-time series with Gettysburg.

The Bullets will be back in action on Saturday when they return to Centennial Conference play at Bryn Mawr. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
