GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Gettysburg earned a doubleheader split with Washington (Md.) in Centennial Conference (CC) action on Saturday at Kirchhoff Field. The Bullets earned a 9-1 victory over the Shoremen in game one, before falling 6-1 in the nightcap.

Senior right fielder Chase Straub (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) paced the Bullets' offense, going 4-for-6 with an RBI and one run scored on the day. Freshman second baseman Mike Backus (Piscataway, N.J./Immaculata) finished 3-for-7 with two doubles and an RBI. Sophomore right-hander Chris Liegel (Oak Ridge, N.J./Pope John XXIII) picked up the complete-game win in game one for Gettysburg (14-3, 3-1 CC), allowing just one run on five hits with two walks and four strike outs. He improved to 5-0 on the season.

Washington (9-7, 3-1 CC) junior left fielder James Tidwell was 3-for-5 with a walk and two runs scored, while senior center fielder Zachary Huba also had three hits on the day, finishing 3-for-8 with an RBI and one run scored for the Shoremen. Freshman right-hander John Harvey picked up the win for Washington, after seven innings of work. He improved to 3-0 on the season.

In game one, Gettysburg wasted no time getting on the scoreboard. After a three-up, three-down top of the first for Washington, the Bullets scored two in the bottom of the inning. Junior center fielder Sean McGee (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck) led off with a single through the left side. Senior third baseman Ben Carey (Colchester, Conn./St. Bernard) followed with a single of his own, advancing McGee to second. A Michael Donohue (Livingston, N.J./Livingston) base hit to right center scored McGee for the first run of the afternoon. Junior first baseman Matt Stillitano (Ewing, N.J./The Hun School of Princeton) reached on a fielder's choice, plating the second.

Gettysburg would score three more times on four hits in the third. Back-to-back singles from senior designated hitter Joe Bonyai (Torrington, Conn./Hotchkiss School) and Donohue, and a Sam Stabert (Wynnewood, Pa./Lower Merion) infield single loaded the bases for the Bullets. A Shoremen wild pitch scored both Bonyai and Donohue. Senior left fielder Mark Campo (Arendtsville, Pa./Biglerville) came through with a single to center to score Stabert.

Gettysburg would rally again in the fifth. Bonyai led off with a single up the middle. He stole second before Donohue walked. Stillitano's bunt for a base hit advanced Bonyai and Donohue. Stabert singled through the right side for two RBI. Campo's sacrifice bunt played out perfectly when Straub followed with a fly out to left and Stillitano tagged up from third to score. Backus doubled down the left field line to score Stabert and round out the scoring for the Bullets in game one.

Game two saw four Washington players drive in a run each, with freshman third baseman Matt Boucher plating two. Six of the Shoremen's twelve hits came in the first two innings. They used a hit and a Bullet error to get on the scoreboard first. Their next five runs came in the top of the second on five hits, and that would be all that they would need to hold off the Bullets.

Gettysburg's one run of the game came in the bottom of the third. Straub led off with a single up the middle. The Bullets took advantage of three Washington errors and a wild pitch to score Straub, but that was as many as they were going to put on the scoreboard in the nightcap.

Gettysburg will be back in action on Tuesday when the Bullets play host to McDaniel in CC action at Kirchhoff Field. The first pitch is slated for 3:30 p.m.
