ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – Gettysburg continued its hot start on the season-opening road trip, sweeping a doubleheader from St. Mary's (Md.) in non-conference action on Sunday afternoon at the Hawks' Nest. The Bullets pounded out 17 runs and 24 hits in the two contests to win 8-2 and 9-8 in eight innings.
Junior right-hander
Kenny Stone (Orlando, Fla./Bishop Moore Catholic), coming off a save in game two on Saturday, went the distance in the opener, allowing just two runs and eight hits to earn the win. Sophomore righty
Will Kleva (Ocean City, N.J./Ocean City) pitched 4 1/3 innings in relief in the second game, helping Gettysburg (4-0) overcome six errors for the win.
Senior right fielder
Chase Straub (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) led the offense, going 5-for-8 with three RBI and three runs scored for the afternoon. He was one of six Bullets with at least three hits. Four players drove in three runs each and three scored three times.
The Seahawks (6-5) got a 2-for-4 performance with three RBI and a run from freshman first baseman Louis Sheppard. Sophomore Jason Turen, who played first base in game one and center field in the night cap, had three hits and crossed the plate three times.
In the second game, Gettysburg scored three runs each in the fourth and fifth innings, but St. Mary's tied it by putting up five in the fourth and one in the fifth. The Bullets got the lead back for good by scoring three times in the top of the eighth inning.
Senior left fielder
Mark Campo (Arendtsville, Pa./Biglerville) reached on a fielder's choice. He stole second and went to third on a double by Straub. Sophomore shortstop
Scott Vladyka (Stanhope, N.J./Lenape Valley Regional) was then walked intentionally to load the bases. One batter later, senior third baseman
Ben Carey (Colchester, Conn./St. Bernard) walked to force in Campo, and senior first baseman
Joe Bonyai (Torrington, Conn./Hotchkiss School) singled through the left side to plate a pair.
The Seahawks did not go quietly in their half, though, thanks in part to three Gettysburg errors. Freshman shortstop John Gill reached on a one-out infield single and advanced to second on an error. Turen reached on another miscue that scored Gill. Turen wound up at second and took third on a wild pitch. He came in to score on the third error, but the game ended on a fielder's choice.
In Kleva's 4 1/3 innings of work, he allowed three runs, only one of which was earned, on three hits. Bonyai went 3-for-4 in the game, driving in three runs and scoring once. Straub was 4-for-4 and scored three times, and Vladyka went 3-for-3 with two RBI and three runs scored.
Gettysburg had taken the lead in the third inning, scoring on a sacrifice fly by Carey, a single by Bonyai and an error. The Bullets added to that cushion with three more runs in the fourth. Vladyka drilled a two-run triple, scoring Straub and Campo, and junior center fielder
Sean McGee (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck) added a sacrifice fly.
The Seahawks sent 10 men to the plate in the bottom of the fourth to cut their deficit to 6-5. Back-to-back doubles by freshman second baseman Steve Hannigan and freshman catcher Trey Cole combined to knock in three runs as part of a five-hit inning. Hannigan plated two with his double. Kleva came on and retired the first batter he faced to end the inning. An infield single by Sheppard would tie it up in the fifth.
In the opener, Gettysburg jumped on the board with a single run in the top of the first. McGee opened the game by bunting for a hit and wound up on third base after a St. Mary's throwing error. Carey followed with an RBI single to center. Both players were 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI in the game.
The Bullets added two more runs in the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly by Vladyka and a single by McGee. That would be all the support Stone would need, but his teammates struck for five in the top of the seventh for good measure.
It did not appear that there would be a rally with Gettysburg sandwiching a pair of outs around a single up the middle by Carey, but back-to-back walks loaded the bases for junior second baseman
Dave Olson (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park). Olson singled to left, scoring a pair of runs. Following a walk to Campo that loaded the bases again, Straub cleared them with a three-run triple to right.
St. Mary's got to Stone for a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning on a single by Sheppard and an error, but he closed the door to seal the win.
The Bullets will continue the season-opening road trip when they travel to Winchester, Va., on Tuesday for a single game against Shenandoah at 4 p.m. The team will then travel to Florida for its annual spring break trip, featuring 10 games in seven days.
