WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senior goalie
Pat Vaughan (Cockeysville, Md./Loyola Blakefield) was named to the 2007 Tewaaraton Trophy Watch List in an announcement made recently by the Tewaaraton Award Foundation. First awarded in 2001, the Tewaaraton Trophy recognizes the top male and female collegiate varsity lacrosse player in the United States.
Vaughan is one of just three NCAA Division III players among the 51 players on the watch list for the 2007 men's award. No non-Division I player has ever won the award. The voting committee will pare down the list throughout the season until there are five finalists. The finalists will be honored and the trophy will be awarded at a banquet to be held at the National Geographic Society Headquarters in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday, May 7.
Vaughan recorded all 19 decisions in goal as a junior in 2006, earning a 17-2 record and tying the school record for wins in a season set by Tim McGinnis in 2002. He also became the first Bullet since McGinnis to be selected as a first-team All-American by the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA), making him the Division III Goalie of the Year. Vaughan is one of just six Bullets to be named a three-time USILA All-American, and he is a two-time first-team All-Centennial Conference selection in addition to being named 2006 CC Player of the Year and 2006 ECAC Division III South/Metro Player and Goalie of the Year.
Vaughan led the nation with a 5.32 goals against average in 2006 that was the seventh-lowest single-season goals against average in the history of NCAA Division III men's lacrosse. He also ranked 19th in the nation with a .625 save percentage. He allowed more than five goals just five times on the season and backstopped the Centennial Conference's best penalty-killing unit. Gettysburg allowed only nine man-up goals in 60 attempts, good for an .850 kill rate, which was over 80 points higher than the next-best team. He was named CC Player of the Week and ECAC Goalie of the Week on Apr. 11. In addition, Vaughan earned all seven decisions, posting a 5-2 record to help the Irish National Team to seventh place at the World Lacrosse Championships in August.
In the 2007 season opener at Washington & Lee on Saturday, Vaughan made his 57th consecutive start and made five saves to pick up the 14-5 win. He has a career record of 47-10 in goal.
Gettysburg will be back in action for the 2007 home opener on Wednesday. The Bullets are set to take on FDU-Florham at 3:30 p.m. at Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium.
