The Bullets got on the board first in the top of third inning. With one out, junior center fielder
Sean McGee (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck) singled through the left side, and senior third baseman
Ben Carey (Colchester, Conn./St. Bernard) followed with a base hit. Bonyai plated both with a double, and scored two batters later on a single by junior first baseman
Matt Stillitano (Ewing, N.J./The Hun School of Princeton).
In the bottom of the inning, the first seven Blue Jays (17-4, 7-0 CC) reached base, with the first five getting hits. Back-to-back RBI singles put senior right fielder Brett Izzo and senior catcher Rob Sanzillo on base. They were aboard when Pietroforte followed with a three-run home run. The next hitter reached on an error and scored on a double by freshman third baseman Lee Bolyard. Junior right-hander
Mike Ciancio (Roseland, N.J./Newark Academy) got the next three hitters, but Johns Hopkins emerged from the inning with a 6-3 advantage.
Pietroforte led off the fifth inning with another home run that put his team up 7-3. Gettysburg responded with three runs in its next turn, though, to pull within one run. Donohue hit a solo home run with one out. Stillitano followed with a single, and the next hitter was retired on a popup. A single by sophomore second baseman
Scott Vladyka (Stanhope, N.J./Lanape Valley Regional) put runners on first and third with two outs, and a pair of Blue Jay errors led to two more Bullet runs to get the visitors within one at 7-6.
Johns Hopkins tacked on two runs in the bottom of the inning with an RBI groundout by Izzo and a double by Pietroforte.
The pitching staffs shut down the opposition from that point to seal the game. Sophomore right-hander Chez Angeloni went six innings for the Blue Jays, allowing six runs on eight hits. He struck out six and walked one to improve to 2-2 on the season. Ciancio got the loss, falling to 4-2, and Johns Hopkins senior Brian DeLeo allowed two hits over the final two innings to record his second save.
The two teams will finish off the season series on Friday afternoon at Kirchhoff Field. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m.
