GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Swarthmore earned a doubleheader sweep of Gettysburg in Centennial Conference (CC) action on Saturday afternoon at Bobby Jones Field. The Garnet earned a 3-1 victory in game one, while holding out to take the nightcap, 9-6.
Junior left fielder Heather Sagaities (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg) was 3-for-8 with four RBI and two runs scored to pace Gettysburg (11-9, 2-4 CC). She collected a double, a triple and a homerun on the day. Junior catcher Abbe Miller (Spring City, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) and sophomore center fielder Erin Ober (Lutherville, Md./Dulaney) each recorded a hit in the losing effort. Miller also drew two walks and came around to score twice, while Ober added a triple, a run and two RBI.
Swarthmore (15-7, 5-1 CC) had three players tally four hits each on the day, with junior designated hitter Dahlia Perez contributing three of her own. Junior shortstop Katherine Gold, freshman catcher Michele Perch and senior outfielder Ashley Brandt combined for 12 of the Garnet's 18 hits. Sophomore right-hander Alexandra Zelaski earned the win in game one for Swarthmore. She pitched seven innings, allowing just one run on five hits with one walk and two strike outs. Freshman right-hander Kathryn Riley picked up the complete-game win in the nightcap for the Garnet. She improved to 7-0 on the season with the win. Zelaski and Riley combined to hold the Bullets to just nine hits in 14 innings of work.
In game one, Gettysburg wasted no time getting on the scoreboard. After the Bullet defense recorded an out and sophomore right-hander Kristy Rubino (Parsippany, N.J./Parsippany) struck out two to start the game in the top of the first, Gettysburg scored its lone run of the game in the bottom of the inning off a single swing from Sagaities. Her homerun gave the Bullets an early no-out lead. Gettysburg, however, wouldn't plate another run until the bottom of the second inning of game two. Swarthmore answered with a run in their next at bat, and added two more in the top of the sixth to take the game, 3-1.
Game two saw five Swarthmore players drive in at least one run each, scoring three in the top of the third and another six in the final three innings.
Down 9-1, Gettysburg roared back in the bottom of the seventh to put together five runs on one hit and two Garnet errors, cutting the margin to three. Back-to-back walks to Miller and sophomore shortstop Nicole Yannotta (Whippany, N.J./Whippany Park) allowed Ober to plate Miller and advance Yannotta to second when she reached base on a Garnet error. Freshman designated hitter Ali Iacobucci (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville) walked to load the bases before Sagaities' two-out triple to right center brought the Bullets three runs closer. Senior right fielder Meg Gorsuch (Mount Airy, Md./South Carroll) took advantage of a Swarthmore throwing error to reach base and plate Sagaities before the Garnet recorded a fly out to end the game.
Tomorrow's CC doubleheader with Haverford has been postponed again due to inclement weather. The Bullets will return to action on Tuesday when they play host to the Diplomats of Franklin & Marshall for a CC twinbill. Game one is slated for 3:30 p.m.
