COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Sophomore right-hander
Kristy Rubino (Parsippany, N.J./Parsippany) struck out four batters, while allowing five hits in game two, and sophomore center fielder
Erin Ober (Lutherville, Md./Dulaney) was 3-for-6 with a walk, two RBI and a run scored in a Centennial Conference (CC) doubleheader split with Ursinus at E. Frost Snell Field on Saturday afternoon. The Bears took game one, 5-1, before the Bullets won game two by a 6-1 count.
For Gettysburg (15-11, 5-5 CC), Rubino walked just one batter to pick up the complete-game win and improve to 9-5 on the season. Junior catcher
Abbe Miller (Spring City, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) added three hits in seven trips to the plate. She had two RBI and a run scored. Freshman
Ali Iacobucci (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville) and sophomore shortstop
Nicole Yannotta (Whippany, N.J./Whippany Park) each tallied two hits and came around to score twice. Yannotta also recorded an RBI.
Ursinus (22-6, 9-1 CC) senior right fielder Mary Reid had one of her team's two homeruns in game one. Junior Lindsay Schmidt recorded the other. Reid and Schmidt each earned two hits on the day, joined by juniors Erin McHugh and Sarah Hennessey. In the circle, senior pitcher Mallory Greene went the first seven innings to take the win in the opener and improve to 12-1 on the season.
The Bullets got things started quickly in the top of the first inning. Junior left fielder
Heather Sagaities (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg) reached on a Bear throwing error, advancing all the way to second. She then advanced to third on a passed ball, allowing her to cruise home on Miller's RBI single. Gettysburg wouldn't tack on another run in their next six at bats.
In the meantime, Ursinus was busy putting together five runs on seven hits in their six chances. Sophomore shortstop Jennie Moore led off the bottom of the first with a single, advanced to third on a Bullet error and scored on a Reid single to knot the game at one. Reid's two-out homerun proved to be the game winner and sparked a three-run fifth for the Bears. Schmidt's homer in the sixth, followed by a quiet seventh for Gettysburg, brought the final score to 5-1.
The visitors got on the board first in game two as well, but this time it would be the hosts who wouldn't be able to answer until recording a single tally in the bottom of the fifth.
Gettysburg scored four runs in the top of the third on six hits. Singles from Iacobucci, Ober, Miller, senior right fielder
Meg Gorsuch (Mount Airy, Md./South Carroll) and sophomore
Jessica Wallick (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg), in addition to a Yannotta double, fueled the rally.
The Bullets scored a single run in both the fourth and fifth to take a commanding 6-0 lead. In the bottom of the fifth, Ursinus put together a run on three hits and a Gettysburg error, but wouldn't be able to get any closer in the nightcap. Neither team could muster a run in the final two innings, giving the Bullets their fifth CC win this season.
The Bullets will return to action on Sunday when they play host to the defending CC champions, the Fords of Haverford. Game one will get under way at 1 p.m.
